Unit Information:

Periop 101 at TMC is a program designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for a career in operating room nursing. The program includes high quality didactic and clinical experiences to develop a well-rounded Perioperative RN. The didactic curriculum is Periop 101: A Core Curriculum from the Association of Peri-Operative Registered Nurses (AORN).  Learning is classroom-based blended learning: computer modules, lecture, and hands on skills.  When not in the classroom the learner will be working alongside experienced OR staff completing a structured clinical training program.

With successful completion of the core curriculum and a passing score on the comprehensive final exam, students will be awarded 41.7 CE’s (Continuing Education). The program is offered several times a year.  Participants will also receive one year of AORN membership. Cohort size varies between 3-8 associates.   

The program timeline is approximately 12-16 weeks.  During that timeframe the candidates will be expected to work Monday –Friday from 0645-1515.  After completion of classroom requirements the associate may be required to change shifts, depending on department needs and the needs of the operating room specialty teams, additionally some form of on call hours are a part of the job description.  Every effort will be made to match shift and service line to the associate’s preferences but no guarantees will be made for either.  

REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: Graduation from a qualified, nationally-accredited nursing program. 

EXPERIENCE: One year of nursing experience in an acute care setting preferred. 

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: Current RN licensure permitting work in the State of Arizona and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.  Some departments such as OR, Ambulatory Surgery, Pediatrics/PICU, PACU, and GI Lab will require advanced life support certification (ACLS and PALS).
