SUMMARY:

Administers automated hearing screenings to newborns in the NICU and Mom/Baby units prior to discharge from hospital.   Educates parents regarding the nature of the screen and connects parents with follow up screening services as indicated.  Assists with data management related to the newborn screening program in the state of Arizona.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Administers testing to determine if infant needs follow up hearing screening or evaluation.

Assures adequate supplies are available each day.

Communicates with nursing unit team prior to seeing patient to assure testing is appropriate at that time.

Provides written documentation of test results in patient medical record as required by department.

Cleans equipment after each use based upon manufacturer’s instructions for use.

Provides education within scope of practice to parent(s) on what to expect from newborn hearing screening procedure

Participates in training related to patient experience, test administration and equipment cleaning/maintenance.

Coordinates with other service areas to ensure proper patient care.

Demonstrates sensitivity to patient comfort and privacy.

Adheres to and supports team members in exhibiting TMCH values of integrity, community, compassion, and dedication. 

Adheres to TMC organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies and standards.

Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION High School Degree.

EXPERIENCE None required.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION:  Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Ability to physically perform automated hearing screening successfully .
  • Ability to effectively present results obtained and educate parents on next steps if infant fails test
  • Ability to work cooperatively with PCT’s, nurses and physicians on unit;  work cooperatively with newborn hearing screening team to provide 7 day/week coverage
  • Work cooperatively with TMC audiology team to assure parents are able to schedule follow up hearing screens easily
  • Ability to define problems related to care delivery and escalate via chain of command
