Job Summary


The Economist role at ICANN is a public facing role which serves as a subject matter expert and advisor on DNS (Domain Name System) market analysis and contributes to the strategic planning activities and analysis on economic trends and competition analysis. The Economist prepares, analyzes and presents information and analysis important to stakeholders of the ICANN ecosystem, its Board and the organization. 

In this role, the Economist interacts with a broad range of stakeholders including staff, the executive management team, the ICANN Board of Directors, the ICANN community of stakeholders, and the public.  The role of Economist reports to the Vice President, Planning. This position needs to maintain the academic integrity of economic analysis within ICANN’s role and mission while supporting other ICANN functions as an expert and in presenting at ICANN’s public meetings.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Review, analyze and present economic and market analyses on macro-economic trends and technical trends in the DNS market and the ICANN ecosystem
  • Contribute to the strategic planning activities by preparing analysis on how ICANN’s role is impacted by competition issues and economic trends
  • Publish and present professional-grade research reports and briefings to internal and external audiences, including the ICANN Board of Directors and the public
  • Present analysis as a subject matter expert for speaking engagements and conferences
  • Support, the mission of ICANN and the multi stakeholder model and maintain ICANN’s impartial approach to the DNS market analysis in all presentations, conferences and reports
  • Prepare and analyze large amounts of complex data prepared by experts and create reporting databases for analysis presented
  • Apply strong technical economics skills, specifically in relation to quantitative, statistical analysis
  • Define and document processes and procedures for economic and trends review and analysis
  • Ensure the relevance and technical quality of research in all projects
  • Ensure consistent, high-quality & timely delivery of projects for all projects and assignments

  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) including public presentation skills
  • Analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience in macro-economic model-building and analysis and documentation
  • Ability to structure and execute qualitative and quantitative analysis and deliver data-driven insights
  • Must have a positive and professional attitude
  • Must demonstrate the ability to maintain professional demeanor in public fora where questioning may arise
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to manage, direct, lead and coordinate, and effectively interact across functions and externally in a consensus-building environment, with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to work with highly diverse international workforce
  • Able to self-manage progress against milestones and deliverables with a high degree of accountability and professional urgency and accountability
  • High level of proficiency in Excel (v-lookup, pivots, macros, etc.), Word and PowerPoint is required
  • Experience in specialized reporting and statistical databases and software tools desired
  • Self-motivated team player with strong ability to lead and influence teams, colleagues and internal and external stakeholders at all levels

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in economics or related fields; a Master's degree and/or a PhD are highly desired
  • Minimum ten to twelve (10-12) years of related experience
  • Experience working in a global institute or non-profit and research environment is a plus


  • Fluency, both written and spoken, in English is required
  • ICANN is a global organization that values diversity; preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated skills in additional languages besides English

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • International travel will be required to support ICANN related meetings and industry conferences as requested and in some cases for lengths of 7-10 days for each trip, approximately three times per year, likely on different continents.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed and to support virtual meetings globally in differing time zones
  • Work is performed in a normal office environment with limited privacy and some exposure to background noise
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee regularly is required to sit. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear; use hands and arms to reach, handle or feel. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
