Summary:

The Grounds and General Maintenance Mechanic I position performs functions in grounds keeping and building maintenance on Casper College facilities and grounds. The position is effective May-October, 2024. 

Responsibilities:

The Grounds and General Maintenance – Mechanic I position is responsible for maintaining and servicing College facilities and grounds including general grounds maintenance, snow removal, landscaping, road/sidewalk/walkway maintenance and other duties as assigned. This position reports to the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Mows and edges lawns and fields with push and riding lawnmowers, tractors and hand and power tools. Plants, transplants, fertilizes and waters lawns, shrubs, bedding plants, ground cover, trees and other plantings with tools such as hoes, trowels, shovels and related implements. of trees, shrubs, bedding plants and ground cover with use of hand or power tools including chain saws, edger, ladders and mechanical lifts. Performs eradication of weeds and pests using both manual and mechanical methods. Weed control can include; pulling, tilling or using line trimmers; preventing weed growth by mulching; calibrating, mixing and applying pesticides and herbicides according to manufacturer’s instructions and applicable laws. 
  • Performs grounds maintenance of athletic fields and their related systems. Performs annual pruning of trees and shrubs according to standards established by the International Society of Arboriculture.
  • Installs irrigation and sprinkler systems by digging trenches by hand or with tractor or trencher lays and connects pipes, valves, sprinklers and controls, and properly back fills work. Inspects, repairs, and programs irrigation systems, provides documentation regarding irrigation systems and repairs, helps maintain grounds as built drawings.
  • Removes trash, leaves, brush, and debris using rakes, blowers, vacuums and shovels from building roofs, sewers, utility tunnels, streets and sidewalks, lawns, parking lots, building entrances, and adjacent roadways and sidewalks under the College’s jurisdiction. Removes trash cans as needed. Transports litter, plant debris, and trash to the dump or other designated area by truck.
  • Removes snow and ice from walkways, parking lots and building entrances with the use of snowplows, power brushes, hand shovels, blowers, salt and ice melting compound.
  • Cleans drains, catch basins, storm drains, and roof gutters. Removes stains and spills from parking lots and walkways, fills potholes in pavement, repairs and maintains exterior furniture and benches.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools and heavy equipment to safely accomplish grounds maintenance tasks. Performs minor maintenance on ground vehicles and grounds equipment by checking fluid levels, applying proper lubrication, and cleaning after use.
  • Installs Campus traffic control signage including building and directory signage and painting.
  • Carries and responds to college provided cell phone.
  • Carries and utilizes a two-way radio while working. 
  • Reports concerns, hazardous conditions, and injuries/ accidents to supervisor or designee.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, working from elevated locations and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud often requiring hearing protection. The typical work schedule is 7:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Monday through Friday during the academic year and 6:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. during the summers. Must maintain critical availability for snow removal and emergencies especially during extremely cold weather as safety becomes a factor. May be called back after hours on weekends, and holidays for emergencies, special assignments, snow removal and/or any other activity which requires the positions presence on campus and/or at the assigned workstation. Call back assignments are at the discretion of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, or the Assistant Facility Operations Director.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand; sit; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; or crawl; and talk; and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with or without assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: those needed to operate College vehicles and equipment, see close-up, differentiate color, have peripheral vision, and depth perception. Frequent driving of a variety of vehicles and equipment on and off-campus will be required. Use of grounds keeping and maintenance tools such as mowers, tractors, power tools, sprayers, and other equipment is required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Able and willing to perform physical labor for a full shift (8 hours).
  • Able and willing to perform physical labor for more than a full shift (more than 8 hours).
  • Ability to follow relevant policies, procedures, instructions and safety standards, work safely with power tools, vehicles and machinery.
  • Maintain a professional, effective and collegial working relationship with co-workers, the public and all campus constituent groups communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Work experience performing grounds maintenance in the public sector i.e. other schools, city, county, or state agencies.
  • Experience in commercial landscaping.

Licenses/Certificates:

  • Valid Wyoming motor vehicle license and be insurable under the College’s insurance plan. Must obtain a Wyoming driver’s license within 2 weeks of accepting position offer.
