Summary:

The Professional Castellow Adult Learning Center (CALC) Instructor conducts Adult Basic Education (ABE) and High School Equivalency (HSE) and/or English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, student advising, and student recruitment. The CALC offers assessment and instruction in reading, writing, science, social studies, and math for high school equivalency students and speaking, listening, reading, and writing for English language learners. 

Note: This grant-funded, full-time, 10-month position has been maintained for over 20 years. Summer and evening hours are required. 

Responsibilities: 

CALC Instructors teach classes for adult education students using appropriate teaching methods; prepare teaching materials and syllabi; access and evaluate student progress; schedule standardized tests and report scores; maintain accurate and adequate records; establish and serve regular office hours; conduct new student orientation; attend training and meetings; obtain and retain certifications; and conduct outreach.

CALC Instructors perform other related duties as assigned, including, but not limited to: conducting distance education; advising students; serving on committees; participating in CALC meetings; providing program budget recommendations; participating in the development of program curricula; and adhering to all institutional and federal/state policies and guidelines. CALC instructors remain current with the adult education field by reading literature, communicating with colleagues, and participating in professional development.

Essential Duties:

  • Assist in the identification and recruitment of prospective students.
  • Assess students’ academic entry levels, academic progress, and learning styles for educational planning purposes.
  • Instruct in the areas of basic reading, basic math, basic writing, high school equivalency, and/or reading, writing, speaking, listening, and citizenship.
  • Maintain accurate records of student registration, attendance, and assessment levels.
  • Refer students to other community agencies when appropriate.
  • Assist in developing, coordinating, and implementing CALC activities as needed.
  • Assist in organizing, implementing, and presenting professional development for program staff and volunteers.
  • Serve as a resource to other staff and program volunteers.
  • Assist in the development of program objectives and strategies, and prioritization and implementation of program goals, including writing grants and proposals.
  • Assist in the dissemination of program information to appropriate local, state, and federal agencies including the writing of annual reports.
  • Serve on committees as required.

Work Environment: 

The typical work environment is a classroom and office setting requiring normal safety precautions. Work is usually performed during the normal workweek including regular daytime and evening hours and occasional early mornings and weekends. This position frequently works with the public and students.  Short periods of time will be spent outdoors traveling between campus buildings in various weather conditions. Outreach sites may require additional travel. Noise levels are usually minimal.

Physical Demands: 

Employee must be able to stand for long periods, speak, hear, use hands and fingers to handle materials and use computers, feel and reach with their hands and arms. Occasional lifting of up to 10lbs may be required; less frequent lifting/moving of up to 20lbs may be required.  Visual requirements require close-up, distance, and ability to adjust focus.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution, preferably in Education, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field
  • Minimum of 1 year teaching experience or work experience related to education, rehabilitation, psychology, or social work 
  • Mastery of oral and written English language
  • Must have a strong background or demonstrated proficiency in basic math, English, and reading
  • Strong organizational and technological skills
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to work within a collaborative setting
  • Ability to maintain sensitivity and compassion when working with a diverse population, including underserved or disadvantaged student populations
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment fingerprint and background check
  • Valid Wyoming motor vehicle license and be insurable under the College’s insurance plan

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution
  • Previous Adult learning teaching experience
  • Previous teaching experience utilizing distance education technologies and practices
  • Ability to speak fluently in more than one language
