Job Title: Maintenance Operator – Mowing and Maintenance

Classification: Non-Exempt

Hiring Range:  $24.47/hour - $27.61/hour

Salary Range:  $24.47/hour - $37.01/hour

*Up to $3,000 Sign On Bonus May Be Available*

Position Summary: Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks in support of the Parks Department consistent with the organization’s values and mission statement.
Supervision Exercised and Received: Position works under the direct supervision of either the City Forester, Parks Field Supervisor, Trails Manager or Construction Superintendent.  May exercise some supervision over Parks Field Technicians and/or seasonal employees.

Essential Job Functions:

Park Maintenance
•    Responsibilities encompass all functions of Maintenance Operator position with a focus on field mowing, trimming and cleanliness.
•    Performs natural resources management tasks including, restoration seeding, planting, irrigation system installation and operation, weeding, fertilizing, and noxious vegetation control. Plants, trims, irrigates, and maintains trees, shrubs and grasses, including mowing and general turf management. Assist in completing various parks construction related duties including, making repairs/improvements and building park facility structures and grounds. Performs construction tasks associated with development and maintenance of parks, trails, and open space facilities. Completes and repairs park facilities and assets. Uses and maintains equipment and hand tools including but not limited to:  landscape and construction tools and equipment, skid loaders, tractors, maintenance carts, backhoes, dump trucks, sweepers, compressors and light trucks.
Equipment Maintenance
•    Performs daily inspections of equipment prior to use for fluid levels, tire pressure wear or other safety problems. Fuels, lubricates, makes minor repairs, or reports other problems to supervisors. Cleans and runs a safety check on all equipment used at the end of the day.
Special Projects
•    Works on special projects, including the annual Winter lighting and Christmas set-up and removal activities. Performs many varied activities associated with special events, such as Arbor Day, restoration projects, parades, recreational, sporting and cultural events. Assists with design, development and construction of new parks and upgrading existing facilities and properties.
Lead Worker
•    Delegates tasks to seasonal personnel during shift as appropriate, and insures completion of tasks during shift as appropriate.  Provides training and resolves problems as necessary.
Snow Removal
•    This position operates with the Downtown Services Team in the winter months to provide snow removal, cleanliness and restroom cleaning in the Downtown Mall.
•    During winter months, performs work duties in the removal of snow and ice from pedestrian malls, sidewalks, bridges, parking lots, culverts and drainage systems with medium and heavy weight equipment and hand tools.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:  One year of maintenance and construction experience.

Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient in the following areas: Microsoft Outlook Email, and a basic understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web based platforms. 

Licenses & Certifications: 
Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date.

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.

Preferred Candidate: Will have experience in construction/maintenance in a Parks operations setting and experience with operating construction equipment such as skid steers, excavators and backhoes.

This position requires a physical examination and Criminal Background Check upon hire.  Employment is contingent upon passing a physical examination and Criminal Background Check.   
Position Type and Work Hours: 
•    Regular full time, hours may vary with workload. 
•    Evenings/Weekends will occasionally (monthly) be required depending on department needs and special projects.
•    On-Call: Required to perform on-call duty and must be immediately available for 24-hour response on a rotating schedule. Such activities include but are not limited to snow removal, cleaning up debris, fallen trees, water line repair, and irrigation and ditch maintenance.

Work Environment:  
•    Indoors: Office environment.
•    Outdoors/Off-Site: Work is performed in a variety of environments both indoors and outdoors, and involves exposure to a variety of weather conditions and temperatures. Meetings, trainings, and site visits at a variety of city facilities and areas.
