Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator II

Department: Streets 

Classification: Non-Exempt

Position Summary: Work as a part of a tight knit streets team while operating all Street Department vehicles and heavy equipment for the purpose of street repair, snow removal and storm drain installation and maintenance, consistent with the organization’s values and mission statement.     

Hiring Range: $29.08/hour - $32.72/hour * Starting salary is based on experience *

Salary Range: $29.08/hour - $43.62/hour 

Supervision Exercised and Received: This position works under the direct supervision of the Streets Superintendent.

Essential Job Functions:
Winter Work
•    Plows and/or removes snow from City streets, alleys, pedestrian malls, bike paths and parking lots. Widens streets using snow blower or motor grader. Performs anti-icing and de-icing operations and sands streets as necessary. Cuts ice pack from City streets and alleys.   
•    Sweeps and/or flushes streets (weather permitting) in an effort to maintain an acceptable PM10 level in the City. Operates pothole patchier truck for pothole repair.
Summer Work
•    Repairs streets by means of removing and replacing asphalt, crack sealing, AMZ patch machine or other practices. Sweeps and/or flushes streets daily. Assists in evaluating streets for the Pavement Management Program. Paints crosswalks. Flags traffic for normal work zone or emergencies. 
Equipment Operation
•    Operates and maintains all kinds of heavy equipment and vehicles in performing job duties.  Performs pre-trip inspections and fills out daily inspection sheets. Fuels, lubricates and performs minor repairs as necessary. Keeps equipment clean and in good operating order.
Sign Maintenance
•    Maintains inventory of necessary material for street signs. Installs and/or repairs street signs and performs other duties relative to sign maintenance as required or assigned.
•    Level III operators instruct other operators in proper installation and maintenance techniques. 
Level III – Crew Leader
•    Serves as crew leader at the director of the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.  Ensures that proper procedures are followed by operators I and II in the operation and maintenance of equipment.  Responsible for/assists with hiring and training of all seasonal, temporary and /or intermittent personnel. Delegates tasks to personnel during shift as appropriate, ensures adequate staffing, and completion of tasks during shift as appropriate.  Communicates policies, procedures, and job expectations.  Provides training and resolves problems as necessary.

Minimum Requirements:
Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent. 
Experience: One to Five years of experience as an equipment operator according to level.
Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient with Microsoft Word and Outlook (Email). Must have a basic understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web-based platforms.
Licenses & Certifications: Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date. Must possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Tanker endorsement.

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge, and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.

NOTE: This position is required to comply with state, federal and local regulations concerning Drug and Alcohol Testing procedures applicable to holders of Commercial Driver’s License (CDLs) holders which includes but is not limited to: pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing and a completed, satisfactory previous employer reference form.

 NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check.  Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.
