Hiring Range: $31.15/hourly - $35.05/hourly

Salary Range: $31.15/hourly-$46.72/hourly

Position Summary: Work as a part of a tight knit streets team while operating all Street Department vehicles and heavy equipment for the purpose of street repair, snow removal and storm drain installation and maintenance, consistent with the organization’s values and mission statement.     
 

Supervision Exercised and Received: This position works under the direct supervision of the Streets Superintendent.

Essential Job Functions: 
Equipment Operation
•    Operates and maintains all kinds of heavy equipment and vehicles in performing job duties. 
•    Performs pre-trip inspections and fills out daily inspection sheets. Fuels, lubricates and performs minor repairs as necessary. Keeps the equipment clean and in good operating order.

Sign Maintenance
•    Maintains inventory of necessary material for street signs. Installs and/or repairs street signs and performs other duties related to sign maintenance as required or assigned.

Summer Work
•    Repairs streets by means of removing and replacing asphalt, crack sealing, Skid steer attached asphalt paver machine or other practices. Sweeps and/or flushes streets daily. Assists in evaluating streets for the Pavement Management Program. Paints crosswalks. Flags traffic for normal work zones or emergencies. 
•    Required to be on call throughout the summer months on a rotational basis.

Winter Work
•    Plows and/or removes snow from City streets, alleys, . Widens streets using loader mounted snow blower or motor grader. Performs anti-icing and de-icing operations and sands streets as necessary. Cuts ice pack from City streets and alleys.   
•    Sweeps and/or flushes streets (weather permitting) in an effort to maintain an acceptable PM10 level in the City. 
•    Operates Crafco asphalt patching equipment for pothole and pavement repair.
•    Night work may be required during this period. Employees are required to be on call for the duration of the winter season.

Emergency Response
•    Must be available during periods of emergency for 24-hour call-out in the winter months and occasional periods in the summer. This includes snow removal operations, sweeping and flushing for high pollution days, monitoring mudslides and high water, sandbagging, and cleanup of debris, fallen trees, and/or sign repairs.

Special Projects
•    May be required to support special events during holidays, such as the 4th of July parade.

Minimum Requirements: 
Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent. 
 

Experience: One to Five years of experience as an equipment operator.
 

Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient with Microsoft Word and Outlook (Email). Must have a basic understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web-based platforms.
 

Licenses & Certifications: 

  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of hire.

  • Must possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Tanker endorsement or must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement within six (6) months of hire.*

    • *City-Paid Initial Training: The City will cover the cost of the first CDL training course within the first six months of hire. If the employee does not pass the CDL exam after the first City-paid course, any additional training or retesting costs will be the employee’s responsibility.

       

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge, and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.

NOTE: This position is required to comply with state, federal and local regulations concerning Drug and Alcohol Testing procedures applicable to holders of Commercial Driver’s License (CDLs) holders which includes but is not limited to: pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing and a completed, satisfactory previous employer reference form.

NOTE: This position requires a 5/6 panel drug test (to be completed at PROCOM – Glenwood Springs), a physical examination (at Grand River Health Clinic West – Parachute), and a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon passing a physical examination, a drug test and Criminal Background Check. 

Position Type and Work Hours:
•    Regular, Full-Time: Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week; hours and days may vary with workload.  
•    Position requires shift work, including days, evenings, and graveyard shifts on a rotating schedule. 
•    May be required to work additional hours outside the normal work schedule. 
•    Must be available for snow removal operations 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the winter months (October through April) 
•    Hours and days vary depending on depending on operational needs 
•    Holidays may be required.

Work Environment: 
•    Outdoors/Off-Site: Work is performed primarily outdoors, with exposure to extreme temperature variations, noise, and fumes at least fifty percent of the time. Duties include snow plowing, which may be complicated by adverse weather conditions, vehicular traffic, and pedestrian activity. Work involves exposure to hazards, including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, vehicular traffic, electrical current, high heat, and chemicals. Meetings, trainings, and conferences at a variety of city facilities and areas.   
•    Indoors: Occasional office work at City facilities for meetings, trainings, and administrative tasks.
