Position: Pharmacy Technician

 

What You'll Do: As a Pharmacy Technician, you will be responsible for analyzing, documenting, testing, implementing, integrating, maintaining, and modifying automated hardware. This includes troubleshooting software and hardware issues and preparing automation-related work orders. The technician will also assist the pharmacy manager and buyer in managing inventory levels in automated devices, monitoring stock-outs, unused inventory, unused equipment, and making recommendations for improvement.

    • Minimum 3 years of pharmacy automation experience
    • Must have acute hospital experience.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Assist pharmacists, technicians, and other hospital staff in the safe, effective, and efficient operation of the automated medication distribution process.
  • Coordinate setup, new builds, installations, and expansions, ensuring all systems (network, emergency power, space, etc.) are ready for the unit 'go-live.'
  • Communicate the status of system projects, activities, and issues to pharmacy, nursing, and other appropriate staff.
  • Inform the pharmacy management team of any upcoming hospital information system interface software changes, nursing unit moves, or other activities that may affect system functionality.
  • Monitor system activities and communications with the main hospital information system.
  • Test new hardware or software as required.
  • Troubleshoot system issues as they arise.
  • Perform physical inspections of stations and coordinate necessary repairs.
  • Ensure stations are updated to conform with changes to the formulary.
  • Assist in managing the user database and maintaining up-to-date user role/area assignments.
  • Manage inventory of units, review and adjust par levels, monitor expiration dates, and review orders against medications withdrawn from the stations.
  • Establish necessary training for each user group to effectively use the system and create training modules if necessary.
  • Train or facilitate training of new staff and re-educate existing staff in all user groups, including Nursing, Anesthesia, Pharmacy, etc.
  • Establish and review daily batch reports, such as refill reports, stock out reports, all station events, discrepancies, overrides, and ordered meds not loaded.
  • Maintain files of all pertinent reports and ensure they are reviewed by a Pharmacist when necessary.
  • Provide cross-functional support duties of pharmacy technicians based on operational needs.
  • Collect data for studies as defined by the Director of Pharmacy or Clinical Manager.
  • Use computer applications or other automated systems, such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, email, and database software, in performing work assignments.
  • Perform other incidental tasks as required.

 

Work Environment:

  • Setting: Primarily indoor building/office environment, well-lighted and ventilated, with possible multiple work sites.
  • Pace: Fast and continuous work pace with a variable workload.
  • Interactions: Frequent contact with staff and public under varied circumstances. Requires clear communication in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Interruptions: Subject to interruptions from calls, inquiries, and potential emotional situations.
  • Emergency Situations: Handles emergencies/crisis situations according to hospital policy.
  • Travel: Occasional travel may be required.
  • Hazard Exposure: Potential exposure to chemicals, flammable materials, gases, electrical/radiant energy, or equipment with/without moving parts.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Continuous (66 to 100% of time): Standing/walking, fine motor activities, near vision, hearing, and verbal communication.
  • Frequent (33 to 65% of time): Reaching above shoulder level, forward bending, twisting, squatting, and kneeling.
  • Occasional (0 to 32% of time): Sitting, climbing, lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds, repositioning/transferring patients up to 200 pounds, pushing gurneys, wheelchairs, and other medical equipment.
