Position: Histotechnologist

 

What You'll Do: As a Histotechnologist you will be responsible for the accurate preparation, processing, and staining of tissue specimens to facilitate microscopic evaluation by a pathologist. This role plays a vital part in diagnosing patient conditions by ensuring tissue samples are properly handled and analyzed according to established laboratory protocols.

 

What We're Looking For:

  • Experience:
    • Minimum 1-2 years of relevant laboratory experience.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of medical terminology.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks, focus in a fast-paced environment, and work effectively with both staff and management.
    • Proficient in computer programs, with excellent typing and data entry skills.
  • Education:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Licensures/Certifications:
    • Must successfully complete and maintain LA City Fire Card certification at the time of hire or within the first 30 days of employment.
    • Histotechnician HT(ASCP) or Histotechnologist HTL (ASCP) certification preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Accurately process surgical specimens following laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Embed, section, and stain tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist.
  • Handle and process all associated paperwork, ensuring accurate documentation and timely reporting.
  • Prepare frozen sections and perform staining as needed.
  • Support Cytology staining processes.
  • Prepare and maintain staining solutions and reagents used in histology.
  • Maintain inventory and perform quality control checks, including troubleshooting equipment issues.
  • Safely recycle solutions and manage laboratory waste.
  • Ensure instruments are maintained, cleaned, and appropriately logged.
  • Enter billing and patient data into computer systems with accuracy.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory inventory and ordering necessary supplies.
  • Label, file, and organize slides and cassettes.
  • Adhere to hospital and laboratory safety policies and procedures.

General Accountabilities:

  • Adhere to customer satisfaction and service excellence standards set by the hospital.
  • Communicate professionally and with cultural sensitivity when interacting with peers, staff, and community members.
  • Participate in departmental performance improvement activities, training, and operational functions.
  • Follow hospital safety protocols, including infection control and patient safety initiatives.
  • Actively participate in the hospital’s Patient Safety Program, including event reporting and process improvement.

Work Environment:

  • Work is primarily conducted in an indoor, well-lit, and ventilated laboratory environment.
  • Fast paced with frequent interaction with staff, the public, and sometimes emotional situations involving illness or injury.
  • Occasionally required to handle emergencies or crises according to hospital protocols.
  • Possible exposure to hazardous chemicals, flammable materials, and medical equipment.

Physical Demands:

  • Patient Care:
    • Continuous standing/walking and occasional sitting.
    • Continuous use of hands for fine motor skills like grasping and operating equipment.
    • Frequent bending, squatting, and reaching, with occasional lifting of equipment up to 25 pounds.
  • Clerical/Administrative Tasks:
    • Frequent sitting and standing with occasional walking.
    • Continuous use of hands for typing and data entry.
    • Occasional lifting of objects up to 25 pounds.
