The City of Aspen is looking for a motivated Finance Intern to support the Finance Department while gaining hands-on experience in municipal finance operations.

Position summary: The Finance Intern provides administrative and customer service support to the Finance Department while gaining hands-on experience in municipal finance operations. This position is for a student seeking exposure to public sector accounting, customer service, and office administration.  The intern works under close supervision and assists with routine tasks that support departmental operations.

Supervision Exercised and Received: Position works under the supervision of the Accounting Manager. This position is non-supervisory.

Essential Job Functions:  

Customer Service

  • Greets and assists visitors that approach the Finance window in City Hall.
  • Answers general questions and routes complex inquiries to appropriate staff.
  • Accepts payments and issues receipts under supervision.


Department and Office Support

  • Assists finance staff with clerical tasks, data entry, record maintenance, and filing.
  • Answers and routes incoming telephone calls appropriately.
  • Helps maintain office supplies and standard forms.
  • Attends meetings as requested and takes notes for departmental use.
  • Interacts with other City departments to obtain or share information as directed

 

Tax and Business Account Support

  • Responds to basic customer inquiries related to taxes and business licenses, with guidance from senior staff
  • Assists with data entry and maintenance of tax and business license records
  • Provides administrative support to tax and finance staff as assigned

This position does not independently approve applications, process exemptions, or perform enforcement or audit functions.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: In the first or second year of study in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Experience: No prior experience required. Interest in finance, accounting, or municipal operations is helpful but not required.

Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook (Email), and have a basic understanding of online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web-based platforms.

Licenses & Certifications: Must possess a valid Driver’s License.  

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge, and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.

NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire.  Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.  

Position Type and Work Hours:

  • Internship Start Date: May 2026
  • Internship End Date: August 2026
  • Temporary, part-time, Monday through Friday, less than 29 hours per week.
  • Work schedule coordinated with the Finance Director.
  • Hours and days vary depending on depending on operational needs

 

Work Environment:  

  • Indoors: Office environment.  
  • Outdoors/Off-Site: Meetings, trainings, and site visits at a variety of city facilities and areas.
