About the role

As a Shunter, you will play a crucial role in keeping our rail network running smoothly, supporting both timetabled services and essential maintenance. Your work will be both physically and mentally engaging, and you’ll be working in live rail yards at both Southern Cross and South Dynon, regardless of the weather. This is a physically demanding position with a rotating 24/7 roster, including early starts, nights, weekends, and public holidays.

 

Under the direction of Lead Shunters and Yardmasters you will:

·        Adhere to strict safety protocols and use a high degree of concentration when executing shunting duties.

·        Couple and uncouple pilots and locomotives with carriage sets.

·        Identify and report hazards and infrastructure irregularities.

·        Lay points and give directions to train drivers into and out of rail yards

·        Communicate clearly with relevant stakeholders in person, via radio and through trained hand signals.

·        Maintain clean and safe workplaces.

·        Complete in class and on the job training as well written and physical assessments to become qualified as a shunter.

About you

We are looking for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment and has experience in industries such as rail, logistics, trades, construction, or any role that involves manual work and a strong focus on safety.

 

Above all you will demonstrate:

·        Zero harm attitude working safely with others in a high-risk setting by recognizing and reporting hazards as they arise.

·        Great communication skills that support quick thinking, taking instruction, conveying information over radio clearly and reporting to your Leads on safety matters.

·        Successful completion of VCE is essential.

Remuneration for this position will be in line with the V/Line Rail Operations and Administrative Employees Agreement 2023.
