We are looking for a Master's student for an internship to support ICANN–UNESCO collaboration on Universal Acceptance (UA) of all domain names and email addresses, including those in local languages, a key to access the multilingual Internet. The work is within UNESCO’s broader work on multilingualism, digital inclusion, and the International Decade of Indigenous Languages 2022–2032. The internship will provide opportunities to contribute to research, drafting, and activities related to strengthening partnerships, supporting policy development, and assisting in capacity-building initiatives.

Based in Brussels, Belgium - at the heart of the European policy landscape - this internship provides a monthly allowance and offers a unique opportunity to contribute to shaping the global Internet and gain experience in working with international and intergovernmental organizations, making contributions to the area of multilingual Internet. The ideal duration of the internship is 6 month.

Key Responsibilities & Duties: 

• Assist in research and drafting for policy work on Universal Acceptance, including through the development of a UNESCO-ICANN policy brief. 
• Support activities to implement and promote the UNESCO–ICANN policy brief, including helping organize information sessions and outreach to UNESCO Member States. 
• Assist with activities related to promoting Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) and Universal Acceptance (UA), contributing to the implementation of the 2003 Recommendation on Multilingualism and Universal Access to Cyberspace, including the Global Roadmap for Multilingualism in the Digital Era. 
• Support coordination and implementation efforts for IDNs and UA in the context of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages 2022–2032, including assisting with the work of the Global Task Force and related working groups. 
• Assist in building partnerships between UNESCO, ICANN, and other stakeholders, such as the major technology companies, to promote multilingualism online through IDNs and UA.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

• Interest in learning about Internet Governance concepts on access to information, multilingualism online, and issues which affect them. 
• Willingness to liaise with a multitude of partners in different time zones and stakeholders across the globe who may speak different languages. 
• Interest in organizing meeting with international participants. Has some experience in conducting research and writing reports. 

Education and Experience Requirements: 

• The intern must be enrolled in a Master’s degree in one of the following fields: political sciences, public policy, digital policy, international relations, communications, or other relevant fields 
• Prior relevant experience (internship, student job or school/university projects) will be considered as a strong asset 
• Languages: Fluency, both written and spoken, in English is required. ICANN is a global organization that values diversity; preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated skills in additional languages besides English
