About Stoel Rives and the Technology & Intellectual Property Practice
Stoel Rives’ Technology & Intellectual Property practice is a multidisciplinary group that includes talented professionals with experience in business, regulatory law, and litigation related to intellectual property rights (patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets). Our patent prosecution team helps clients secure patent rights globally and provides strategic counseling so clients can enforce and monetize their IP assets.
As a patent prosecution associate on the team, you will develop and hone your patent drafting skills and your ability to provide sound technical, legal, and business advice to our clients. Our industry and business expertise inform how we manage our clients’ patent assets to achieve their business objectives.
If you are interested in working with a group of collaborative, hard-working, and dedicated lawyers and staff, this is the place for you.
Like all of the firm’s practice groups, the IP group at Stoel Rives greatly values diversity. In 2019, fifty percent of income partner promotions, and fifty percent of new hires identify as women, racial and ethnic minorities, and/or LGBTQ+ lawyers. More broadly, in 2020, the majority of the firm’s Executive Committee consisted of diverse attorneys.
Successful members of the patent prosecution team enjoy teamwork, high client visibility, early responsibility, and community involvement (including pro bono service for local startup initiatives).
The Skills Needed to Be Effective in This Role
We pride ourselves in forming diverse teams with a wide array of interpersonal and professional attributes. We don’t expect any one person to embody all of these skills, but the below serves to describe our ideal team player. If you have many of these skills, and are enthusiastic to learn, we encourage you to apply.

Good judgment, responsiveness, and perseverance;
Strong intellectual curiosity;
A commitment to client service and team success;
JD from an accredited university;
Active membership in the Oregon State bar or ability to waive in (preferred).
What You Will Learn as Part of Our Team
As part of our patent prosecution team, you will be drafting new patent applications, analyzing invention disclosures, providing advice on patentability and patent strategy, and responding to examination reports from patent offices around the world. You will also have significant contact with inventors, work closely with law firm partners, and have the opportunity to assist our patent litigation teams, collaborate on IP dispute matters, work on licensing deals, and assist our corporate teams on IP aspects of business transactions. In addition, you will have exposure to strategic patent non-infringement, invalidity, and unenforceability analyses.
A broader question you may have is, “How will this position enhance my legal skills and career trajectory?” At Stoel Rives, we offer a unique lateral integration program and core competency model that are designed to provide a roadmap of the practical skills, abilities, and client service techniques our lawyers need to succeed and progress at the firm. We also established a New Lawyer Integration Program that has deepened our relationships and connections with our new lawyers, while providing them with the mentoring, resources, and information necessary for success.

What We Are Doing to Ensure A Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Environment
Stoel Rives places a high priority on attracting and retaining lawyers with different backgrounds and life experiences. This makes us better and happier as people, as an organization, and as legal advisers. We are proud to offer many engagement opportunities including a firmwide DE&I Committee, Associates Committee, Pro Bono Committee, Affinity Groups, and Parenting Circle.
We proudly partner with Diversity Lab to implement innovative programs to advance Stoel Rives’ DE&I goals, including the aggressive metrics-based goals we’ve adopted as one of five founding Move the Needle Fund firms. Our efforts with Diversity Lab include certification under the Mansfield Rule, to boost the representation of diverse lawyers in our firm’s leadership by broadening the pool of candidates considered for opportunities, along with participation in the OnRamp Fellowship for legal returners and the OnTrack Sponsorship program.
