WSP Canada has an immediate opening for a Decarbonization Advisor to join our national Climate Change, Resilience and Sustainability team as part of our growing ESG practice. This role is primarily focused on Providing strategic support to clients with setting Net Zero and Science-based Targets and GHG reduction pathways including developing and implementing action plans. As an Advisor, you will play a leading role in our ESG practice to support the strategic direction of our ESG business, and with the other Advisors in our practice to deliver key projects and grow the business. 

You will be part of one of Canada’s largest climate change consulting teams, which includes of climate change engineers, scientists, economists, and policy professionals who support our clients to build a low-carbon and resilient Canada.  

This role can be based in any major city centre in Canada, with opportunities to relocate within Canada as your career develops here at WSP.

Our ESG team is growing quickly.  Our clients include TSX-60 companies, Fortune 50 companies, large investors, private companies, and private equity funds. Within the Climate Change, Resilience and Sustainability team, our ESG practice focuses on the climate change aspects of the ‘E’, although not to the exclusion of other aspects of E, S, or G.

A day in the life:

  • Spearheading or supporting the delivery of projects for clients;
  • Leading and supporting the delivery of projects for clients with a focus on advising corporates across all sectors on assessing their GHG emissions (Scope 1, 2 & 3), setting net zero and science-based targets, GHG reduction pathways and scenarios, developing and implementing implementation plans.
  • Focusing on business development, including enhancing the relationships we foster with our current clients and expanding to new clients.
  • Taking charge of the development and improvement of services and collaborating within WSP’s Business Lines while providing climate change advisory services to other teams or on projects outside of the Climate Change, Resilience and Sustainability team.
  • Acting as an advisor in climate and ESG across WSP – generally remaining active in the relevant academic, scientific, and professional community through presentations and participation in seminars, conferences and symposiums and other activities.
  • You’ll be managing multiple projects as an independent contributor and adhering to appropriate deadlines while also provide technical mentorship and support to junior team members.

  We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • Direct Experience in climate change and decarbonization strategy development
  • Advanced degrees in engineering or science, or studies in a relevant field
  • Intermediate to senior level experience (6+ years) industry experience in providing technical support on a variety of climate change mandates

Ideally you will have expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Energy efficiency / GHG management; including a deep technical understanding of decarbonization mechanisms and technologies
  • Direct experience with GHG accounting standards (such as the GHG Protocol, ISO 14064) and experience conducting GHG inventories and life cycle assessments. Experience with LCA databases (such as GaBi and EcoInvent) considered an asset;
  • Experience conducting Scope 3 value chain GHG assessments and knowledge of Scope 3 techniques and methods;
  • Familiarity with the PCAF standard and experience quantifying financed emissions considered an asset;
  • Knowledge of target setting approaches including science-based targets;
  • Familiarity with the TCFD, CDP, GRI, SASB and other sustainability reporting frameworks ;
  • An understanding of low carbon technologies, renewable energy, and new emerging technologies such as CCS, hydrogen, etc.;
  • Experience working on GHG emission reduction initiatives, delivering decarbonization strategies and associated cost/benefit analysis;
  • Relevant knowledge of carbon offset markets and programs;
  • Ability to navigate large and complex data sets and extract insightful observations;
  • Research and analytical skills - you’re able to identify, review and synthesize key findings in scientific and engineering literature, reports, other relevant publications to client audiences and project teams;

  • Advanced verbal and written technical communication skills. Ability to write concise, clear and effective narratives in reporting, in presentations, and contributions to proposals;
  • Ability to collaborate remotely across geographies and sectors; and,
  • Additional language skills (French or Spanish) would be a bonus
