WSP Canada has an immediate opening for a Climate Risk Analyst to join our national Climate Change, Resilience and Sustainability team as part of our growing ESG practice. This  role is primarily focused on  supporting the delivery of strategic support to clients by performing climate scenario analysis and identifying climate-related physical and transition risks and opportunities As an Analyst, you will play a key role in conducting analysis and directly supporting Advisors, Directors and Management in project delivery.

You will be part of one of Canada’s largest climate change consulting teams, which includes of climate change engineers, scientists, economists, and policy professionals who support our clients to build a low-carbon and resilient Canada.  

This role can be based in any major city centre in Canada, with opportunities to relocate within Canada as your career develops here at WSP.

Our ESG team is growing quickly.  Our clients include TSX-60 companies, Fortune 50 companies, large investors, private companies, and private equity funds. Within the Climate Change, Resilience and Sustainability team, our ESG practice focuses on the climate change aspects of the ‘E’, although not to the exclusion of other aspects of E, S, or G.

A day in the life:

  • You’ll be assisting with deliverable preparation and completion for climate-related risk and opportunity assessments;
  • You’ll also be providing technical analysis and/or support to support project delivery while ensuring that your responsibilities and deliverables are completed on time and within the set budget;
  • You’ll have opportunities to manage small projects on occasion;
  • You’ll play a part in contributing to practice development and thought leadership while supporting the development of proposals including pricing, scope development, and client interaction;
  • You’ll be supporting business development activities through developing marketing materials and taking on additional duties in a team setting.

  We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • Direct Experience in climate change strategy development, climate change scenario analysis and risk and opportunity assessment (for either/both of physical and transition risks and in line with TCFD);
  • Advanced degrees in engineering or science, or studies in a relevant field
  • 2-5 years experience in providing technical support on a variety of climate change mandates

Ideally, you will have expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Ability to assess climate risks and opportunities for different sectors (e.g. mining, utilities, agriculture);
  • Experience working with outputs from climate models (CMIP, GCMs, RCMs, etc.) and climate change data analysis (such as ensemble analysis, uncertainty quantification, etc.). Ability to work with large and multidimensional data formats (netCDF, TIFF) and relevant experience processing and analyzing climate model projection data using Python, R or other programming tools considered an asset;
  • Experience working with outputs from integrated assessment models in the context of climate change and policy assessments. Familiarity with transition risks associated with climate change, transition/energy scenarios (such as the NGFS, IEA) and international and regional climate policies and regulations;
  • Knowledge of GHG accounting and target setting would be a bonus, but is not required.
  • The ability to develop and present analyses using programs including GIS software, Power BI, Tableau, and Microsoft Excel. Sound knowledge of relational database management and SQL would be a bonus but is not required.
  • Research and analytical skills - you’re able to identify, review and synthesize key findings in scientific and engineering literature, reports, other relevant publications to client audiences and project teams;
  • Ability to navigate large and complex data sets and extract insightful observations;
  • Advanced verbal and written technical communication skills. Ability to write concise, clear and effective narratives in reporting, in presentations, and contributions to proposals;
  • Ability to collaborate remotely across geographies and sectors; and,
  • Additional language skills (French or Spanish) would be a bonus
