WSP is currently seeking a VP of Property and Buildings to join the leadership team in Canada. Reporting to the EVP Property and Buildings Canada, the VP Strategic Growth and Business Development will provide leadership for the business development organization that supports the profitable growth of WSP within the Property & Buildings business.  The VP Strategy Growth and BD will lead collaboratively with the Property and Buildings Submarket Sector Leaders and key company stakeholders, while responsible for the creation and execution of the business development strategy with a growth focus on specific sector areas (e.g. Healthcare, Transit, etc.)  The leader will support the strategic objectives by effectively positioning WSP in identified sectors and markets nationally, while leading the key specific market leaders, and proposal team to thrill WSP client experience.  


  • Leads the development of the business development strategy and accountable to execute and manage to the budget;
  • Oversee the identification, development and management of the business strategic growth, including:
    • Strategic Pursuits;
    • Diamond, National and Key Accounts;
    • Target market Sectors; and,
    • Growth Initiatives
  • Provides leadership on select major pursuits, accounts and improvements including defining contracting strategies (e.g. collaborative contracting), review of commercial terms and measures to manage and mitigate risk during key pursuit processes including interacting directly with clients during negotiations;
  • Review trends, and feedback from market at large to maximize opportunities for emerging client priorities;
  • Builds relationships with key clients, industry organizations, teaming partners, and stakeholders to identify opportunities and growth for the business;
  • Provides leadership by communicating the business development budgets and targets, by engaging all submarket leaders in achieving the objectives;
  • Identify key talent and be responsible for the activities of the business development teams, including:
    • District (geographical) business development awareness, integration and cross-selling; and,
    • Submarket sector business development alignment, centres of technical excellence and practice area networks
    • Collaborate with peers from other National Business Lines and WSP Global Regions
  • Collaborates with peers nationally and in other geographies to leverage expertise, ensure client management satisfaction and implement best practices;
  • Responsible for leadership of market specific leaders and proposal team to ensure a high degree of employee engagement and low turnover of staff by fostering a high-performance culture;
  • Visibly champions the WSP programs of safety and ethics & compliance to ensure they are an overriding part of the organizational culture;
  • Lead and/or support enterprise improvement initiatives;
  • As a governance committee leader, determine GO/NO-GO opportunities;
  • Experience with industry committees, boards and special interests;
  • Partner with other support services on corporate initiatives
  • Attend corporate and industry events, as required
  • Other duties as assigned/required


  • Bachelor's degree or other equivalent experience. Master’s degree (M. Eng., M. Sc.A., MBA) is considered a plus;
  • 15+ years' experience of progressive business development experience within the built environment, with management experience at a senior level
  • Ability to grow a complex, multi-disciplinary business, through collaboration and influence
  • Experience with complex data sets related to market insights, client information and opportunity pipeline maintenance
  • A proven track record of developing business with existing and new clients, as well as experience in interfacing with municipal, provincial, and federal agencies, and the private sector;
  • Excels within a collaborative matrix management model in influencing senior leaders
  • Demonstrated ability to strategically address growth opportunities and articulate evolving priorities in the market;
  • Proven sales, negotiation, presentation and interpersonal skills thorough knowledge of current marketplace trends and activities
  • A track record of creating a culture where people do their best through working collaboratively, empowering teams to identify and solve problems, creating a clear sense of identity with the company, and holding teams accountable for meeting their collective goals
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced and multi-task work environment
  • “Self-Starter” and deadline driven
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Suite (eg. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint), Power BI, Deltek Vision
  • The ability to successfully lead with little direction to meet organizational goals;
  • Confidence to influence a high caliber team to drive a business to higher performance levels and seize the opportunities presented internally and in the market;

  • Highly professional with strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Excellent analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills to evaluate business problems and apply knowledge to identify appropriate solutions;
  • Collaborative interpersonal skills with an advanced ability to navigate through ambiguity;
  • Advanced interpersonal and presentation skills; ability to present and discuss strategies and technical information in a manner that establishes rapport and influence
  • Must be open for 30% travel throughout Region and also as required nationally;
  • This position may require some international travel.
