THORNHILL 

At WSP our Finance team is working hard to provide financial business partnership, advisory input and analysis to our operations teams to support and continue to ensure that we are delivering the best quality projects and value for our clients. 

We are currently seeking a Divisional Controller to join our Finance Team, and to be located at our Thornhill office. Reporting to the Sr. Controller T&I, the Divisional Controller is responsible for tracking the financial results of the national business line and reporting and analyzing project earnings for the business line within the province.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work effectively with a dedicated group of professional finance staff and liaise with other functional team members to oversee operational finance including coordinating with other departments on issues related to business activities;
  • Takes an ownership role with the operational leadership team in managing the P&L and specific Balance Sheet accounts while leading the monthly forecasting, annual budgeting and strategic planning processes;
  • Coordinate with National Business Lines in developing and implementing strategies to achieve operating objectives;
  • Ownership over the implementation and compliance with revenue recognition policies and standards in accordance with IFRS;
  • Manage and monitor performance throughout the month and during the month end close process to achieve KPI metrics established for net revenue, multiplier, utilization, overhead spending, etc.;
  • Provide accurate forecasts as needed and communicate goals for the business unit in achieving the financial metrics;
  • Maintain appropriate reserves (i.e. AR, E&O, Forward Loss, WIP, etc.) and monitor specific metrics related to earnings, cash, pipeline, stats and others to help efficiently run the business;
  • Understand the sources of revenue and Business Development activity that is ongoing and provide financial assistance as required to support operations in winning new work and converting awarded pursuits;
  • Analyze pipeline data and provide accurate forecasts of accessibility of backlog for both gross and net revenue and take ownership in properly maintaining the contracted backlog, closing out projects as appropriate;
  • Understand cash management activities and coordinate with operations and the working capital manager in establishing and updating goals for DSO, cash collections and billings;
  • Work with operations on driving favorable commercial terms on contracts including training staff in the business on effective WC practices and instill a culture of cash;
  • Take leadership in partnering with operations to drive cash collections efforts and results through cash calls and strategy sessions in collecting outstanding cash;
  • Focus analytics on the cost structure within the Business Unit to ensure controllable costs are being managed optimally and within budgets;
  • Monitor discretionary costs such as travel, conferences, donations, equipment costs, etc. and makes recommendations to gain efficiency and effectiveness;
  • Assist in managing indirect labor costs and utilization including identifying and communicating areas of opportunity;
  • Drive and foster an ROI mentality relative to business development and provide adequate feedback and data to business lines allowing for proper management and oversight of Business Development spend;
  • Create a motivational work environment for team members that fosters responsibility and accountability and acknowledges performance and achievements which is a critical aspect of the role;
  • Actively participate in major project reviews and ensure proper financial support for EAC’s and assist in developing mitigation plans of the impact to financial performance;
  • Implementing internal controls ensuring that company policy and risk management procedures are understood and executed;
  • Identify risks and opportunities in the Business Line and develop plans to manage them;
  • Other responsibilities/duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

  • University Degree in Accounting or Business Administration;
  • Accounting Professional designation such as CPA, CA, CMA or CGA is required;
  • Experience running and implementing new technologies and practices to streamline processes;
  • Advanced knowledge using Excel, PowerPoint and other Microsoft Office products;
  • Prudent risk taker and problem solver that is results orientated with exceptional ability to execute;
  • Champions integrity and trust, coupled with strong work-ethics;
  • Ability to multi-task and juggle multiple priorities simultaneously;
  • Displays self-awareness and ability to deal with ambiguity;
  • Possesses edge and energy and displays strong interpersonal and communication skills to motivate and drive people in the organization.
