WSP is currently seeking an Automation and Controls Lead to join our Manufacturing team in GTA. Reporting to the National Practice Lead, in this position you will be comfortable leading technical projects and using your professional network to promote WSP automation and controls services, including Industry 4.0 services.

With your market knowledge and customer relations, you will solicit, prepare and present proposals.

In your role as Automation & Controls lead, you will serve as a technical leader for engineering mandates in automation, Industry 4.0, instrumentation, and process control.  


  • In collaboration with the Business Development team:
    • Develop and maintain client relationships
    • Network with client contacts and maintain CRM
  • In collaboration with the client, define the scope of projects, prepare and present proposals
  • Lead projects by carrying out engineering, quality control, and technical reports
  • Plan and coordinate work, from project definition to commissioning.
  • Ability to work with a minimum of instructions and complete tasks independently
  • Coordination with various departments and disciplines required for project implementation
  • Ability to work and complete tasks independently, make decisions, and take responsibility for technical matters
  • Must be able to attend industrial sites and observe all applicable safety regulations
  • Assign and review the work of junior A&C engineers (engineers-in-training), technicians, and drafters assigned to projects and assess the technical scope
  • Prepare the Bill of Materials required for project implementation in accordance with codes, standards, drawings, and other established methods while adhering to WSP’s quality system requirements
  • Coordination with various business lines and disciplines required for project implementation
  • Interact with clients and provide technical support to the team in charge of business development
  • Market knowledge and a solid network of industry contacts
  • Establish and maintain client contact
  • Actively participate in the preparation of technical and commercial proposals
  • Must be able to attend industrial sites and observe all applicable safety regulations
  • Assume the responsibilities of a project manager, which involves, among other responsibilities, ensuring that all assigned deliverables are produced in compliance with quality requirements, on time and on budget
  • Maintain synergy with the project team and other Business Lines
  • Participate in the recruitment and growth of WSP Automation team in Southern Ontario/GTA  


  • Education requirements; Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or Instrumentation and Control from an accredited institution;
  • Required years of experience; 7-15 years of working on industrial manufacturing projects;
  • Soft skills; able to interact, as part of a team, with all types of clients and teammates; proactive and able to manage time well; able to build relationships; business acumen; action-oriented; self-starter and learner;
  • Technical skills; Good knowledge of Ethernet networks, fiber optics, and experience in one or more of the following industries: food and beverage, chemical, steel, cement, oil and gas, working knowledge of CSA standards, ANSI standards, IEEE standards, Ontario Building Code, and other applicable codes;
  • Communication skills. Be fluent in the English language with excellent verbal and written communication skills with a working knowledge of the Microsoft suite of programs.
  • Member of the PEO professional engineering association an asset;
  • Practical experience in the design of instrumentation and control systems (design criteria, network architecture, control system, and instrument selection, etc.)
  • Relevant experience in control system development and programming (SCADA, PLC, DCS) including Rockwell, Emerson, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Aspentech,…
  • Onsite experience and focus on work safety
  • Experience in start-up troubleshooting, commissioning, and system installation
  • Excellent technical writing skills
  • Experience in a consulting engineering or system integrator environment
  • Multidisciplinary design engineering experience
  • Bilingual (English/French) is an asset
  • Knowledge of Industry 4,0 is definitively an asset
