WSP is currently seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer to join our Rail and Transit Engineering team, located at our Thornhill, ON office.  Reporting to the Manager, this position will be responsible for design, design review and management as well as technical reporting of the mechanical systems for tunnels and underground subway stations. The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will work collaboratively with a team of Chief Engineers and Specialists from the rail and transit disciplines (e.g. Systems Engineering, Signals, Electrification Systems, Data Communications, and Project Controls), Project Managers, Systems Engineers, Signals Engineers, Analysts, and Coordinators.  As a member of the Rail and Transit Engineering team, you will be given opportunities to use your transferable skills to define processes, create execution plans, mentor the junior team members, and be the technical lead for multiple projects.  You will be supported by management to develop work plans and professional skills to become a strong leader in the consulting environment


  • Mechanical engineering with an emphasis in the design, design review and technical reporting related to mechanical systems of transit environments such as subway and light rail systems, including tunnels and underground stations. Relevant mechanical subsystems include Fire suppression, Plumbing, Drainage, and HVAC;
  • Review mechanical systems design and analyses prepared by other designers and evaluation of their accuracy and adherence to the specified requirements;
  • Liaise with the client and vendors to identify the required mechanical systems’ operational and maintenance requirements and transfer these requirements into the system design basis, technical specifications, and testing acceptance criteria;
  • Coordinate with other disciplines such as Traction Power, Trackwork, Signaling, Communications, Civil/ Structural;
  • Technical and engineering support to projects throughout a project’s lifecycle (i.e. design, construction, testing and commissioning, and hand-over);
  • Other responsibilities may include preparation of contract changes, review of shop drawings, or field visits to assess conformance of the work to codes, standards and the design;
  • Participate in meetings with the client and positively contributing to the development of client relationships;
  • Support WSP business development;
  • Other duties as assigned/required


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related engineering discipline, preferably mechanical engineering;
  • Registered Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers of Ontario;
  • Project Management Professional certification will be considered an asset;
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a related engineering field, including direct experience in subway mechanical systems, fire suppression, HVAC;
  • Experience in a Consulting Engineering environment will be considered an asset;
  • Proven ability to work successfully in multi-disciplinary teams and across different business units;
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills for clients of all levels;
  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of industry relevant standards and codes (NFPA, ASHRAE, OBC, etc.);
  • Sound experience in the software typically used for fire mechanical and HVAC analyses and modelling;
  • Familiarity with Simulex is an asset;
  • Up-to-date with current mechanical engineering principles, methods and practices as applied to underground rapid transit systems and tunnels;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
