WSP is currently seeking energetic and detail-orientated technicians and technologists at multiple levels of seniority (junior, intermediate and senior), for our new Winnipeg Materials Testing Laboratory. Reporting to the Lab Supervisor or Lab Manager, this position will be responsible for the specialized laboratory and field testing of soils, aggregates, concrete and asphalt products used in various construction projects including municipal infrastructure, land development and building construction. The work will be conducted both in the laboratory and field environment as required.

A day in the life: 

  • You will perform all related laboratory testing (Example: Proctor, Gradation, Hydrometer, Atterberg Limits, Marshall Asphalt analysis & Concrete testing) in an accurate and efficient manner in compliance with the WSP Laboratory Quality Manual and in conformance with ASTM, AASHTO and CSA Test Standards and CCIL certification requirements;
  • You will perform applicable field testing and sampling of various construction materials including soils, granular products, concrete and asphalt.
  • You will participate in relevant proficiency tests, and ensure prompt and accurate testing and reporting of results;
  • You will support professional staff in the preparation and testing of concrete and asphalt mix designs;
  • You will do data gathering and interpretation including data entry of test results to produce a final report suitable for review and distribution;
  • You will maintain a safe working environment in compliance with the WSP Health and Safety Policy;
  • You will maintain equipment calibration and maintenance and participate in quality audits and identify, investigate & report non-conformances to the lab supervisor;

We'd love to hear from you if you have... 

  • Successful completion of post-secondary technical education in Civil Engineering Technology or related discipline;
  • Eligibility for certification with The Certified Technicians & Technologists Association of Manitoba (CTTAM);
  • 2-5 years of experience (junior), 6-9 years of experience (intermediate) and 10+ years of experience (senior), in the lab or field materials testing of construction materials including, but not limited to: soils, aggregates, Portland cement concrete, asphalt materials;
  • Experience and knowledge with relevant standardized lab testing procedures such as ASTM, AASHTO and CSA;
  • Time management skills, organizational skills, independent thinking skills, problem-solving and analytical skills;
  • Ability to take direction and work independently as well as be team member and collaborate with other lab personnel;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and able to schedule and coordinate multiple tasks and assignments;
  • Must be mathematically proficient with regards to the necessary skills required for laboratory and field testing applications;
  • Must have data gathering, data entry, data interpretation and report generating skills.  With attention and emphasis on accuracy and efficiency;
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written).  Ability to liaison with clients, contractors and work colleagues on a professional basis;
  • Ability to physically lift up to 25 kg repeatedly, as required, on a daily basis. Physically able to work in a noisy, dusty environment (indoors and outdoors) using all applicable Personal Protective Equipment as required. Physically able to work in an outdoor environment including in rough terrain as required;
  • Experience in lab / field certification processes (including CCIL), equipment maintenance and calibration, lab proficiency testing programs;
  • Ability to travel to job sites within the province and work extended hours and weekends as required and as construction projects dictate;
  • Acceptance and cooperation to work in a respectful workplace environment;
  • Experience and training in Workplace Health and Safety protocol and experience in reading and following Safe Work Practices and Procedures;
  • Valid Class 5 Manitoba drivers license in good standing. (Abstract may be requested)
