About the Organization: New Teacher Center (NTC) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to disrupting the predictability of educational inequities for systemically underserved students by accelerating educator effectiveness. Founded by teachers in 1998, NTC works with leaders at all levels of a system to center students’ needs to transform professional learning. Job Summary: Under the direction of the Senior Program Consultant or Director, the Program Consultant may serve as a Client Lead with some partners, designs and facilitates professional learning and provides consulting on program implementation in multiple contexts. While the Program Consultant may support additional work, the primary focus of this role is to support a multi-year grant aimed at developing whole-school professional development using Social Emotional Learning as a lever for success.  Schools are likely located in Brooklyn & Queens, New York and a heavy in-person presence will be required post-COVID.  Participates in work teams to develop content and services for NTC and/or support internal learning for colleagues; supports the development of new NTC Program staff, both around facilitation of PL and program consultation.

The Program Consultant is instrumental in enacting NTC’s mission, theory of change,  and Program Theory of Action,  with particular focus on these practices:

  • Assess student, school and system needs in order to support systems and schools through inquiry-based consultation 
  • Identify and strengthen key conditions to leverage coaching models that actively engage educators in deepening the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the diverse needs of every student 
  • Build the capacity of teachers and leaders to understand the needs of underserved students and implement equitable, culturally responsive and standards-aligned curriculum and instruction 
  • Support our partners in developing coherence and structures for sustaining the work by including partners inside and outside of the system 
  • Co-construct measures of success and collaboratively monitor progress to inform decision-making 

The Program Consultant also participates in work teams to develop content and services for NTC and/or support internal learning for colleagues, and supports the development of new NTC Program staff, both around facilitation of PL and program consultation. To best support our NTC program team to disrupt barriers to equity, Program Consultants commit to:

  • Know our people, our strengths and opportunities for growth and strategically leverage staff experience and interests in program decision-making
  • Spotlight successes and problems of practice to deepen our understanding of key levers to support our partners 
  • Prioritize deepening our expertise through collaboration, meaningful feedback, and learning experiences and continually adapt, innovate and remain responsive to the needs of our underserved students 
  • Know our partners, their priorities and obstacles to success and speak the language of the district as trusted advisors 
  • Collaborate to learn from and share knowledge with mission-aligned experts and organizations across the field 

Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

The following is an overview of the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. The employee may perform other duties as required.

  • Advocate for and support partner program leaders  as Client Lead by leading professional learning, program implementation, design and customization, and consultation. These contracts are often focused on program implementation of existing services (always working to adapt and make them responsive to needs and priorities) versus higher-stakes, system-level contracts or collaborations requiring new service models and content. 
  • Provide technical assistance and consultation to clients around program implementation
  • Contextualize and facilitate professional learning for mentors, instructional coaches, school leaders or system leaders. 
  • Responsible for highest quality program delivery,  sustaining and deepening partnerships, and developing scopes of work with continuing clients
  • Play a role in supporting capacity building for other Program staff, via onboarding, coaching for new staff, and participating in peer coaching cycles of continuous improvement for example 
  • In some cases, design new materials that support partners’ needs and priorities
  • Monitor and support partner program’s progress utilizing a formative program assessment process, via NTC’s Kiano platform
  • Communicate regularly with supervisor regarding each partner program’s progress and strategic support in alignment with the contracted scope of work
  • Coordinate with  Program Solutions team and partner to develop, monitor and analyze implementation and impact data 
  • Lead design of professional learning content, models, and services  for NTC
  • Develop processes and practices for collecting, analyzing, and using student survey and agency data to improve program and student outcomes

Professional Learning Responsibilities

  • Commitment to equity and deepening cross-cultural agility by exploring own identity and biases to best combat historical and institutional inequities 
  • Participate and contribute to internal collaborative learning and spotlight successes and problems of practice to deepen our understanding of key levers to support our partners 
  • Demonstrate agency and engage in self-directed learning to meet partner needs and share learnings across teams and the department 
  • Develop conference proposals and conduct conference presentations
  • Manage personal calendar, travel, and job responsibilities

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of recent classroom teaching experience in (K-12) preferred.  
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years facilitating professional learning for adults and/ or coaching/mentoring teachers and/or school leaders 
  • Extensive experience working at the school or district level on Social Emotional Learning Professional Development is required; familiarity with NYCDOE’s Culturally Responsive Sustaining Education Framework preferred
  • Experience with coaching for results using student survey and agency data preferred
  • Must be experienced with Common Core State Standards or New Rigorous State Standards
  • Valid teaching and/or administrative certificate/licensure
  • Knowledge of NTC’s approach to educator development, mission and theory of change, and contributions to the field. 
  • Knowledge of professional teaching and/or administrative standards, content materials, assessment, and methods that improve student achievement in core standard areas
  • Knowledge and experience designing and facilitating professional learning for teachers and/or leaders, and coaching educators
  • Ability to develop or contribute to professional publications, training materials, grants, and reports
  • Ability to manage complex programs involving multiple participants
  • Ability to manage one’s time and productivity in a fluid, team-oriented work environment with a high level of initiative, creativity, and flexibility
  • Ability to collaborate with NTC personnel, often in other functions, to assess and improve partner services using innovative and effective approaches
  • Demonstrate ability to develop strong relationships and work well within districts and NTC
  • Reflective practitioner demonstrating the ability to use feedback to improve self, program and community
  • Knowledge of school reform, professional learning communities, and the impact of coaching 
  • Knowledge of adult learning theories and practices
  • Willingness to travel based on office location/client or project assignments – 50% Proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint 
  • General knowledge of Google Apps, Adobe Acrobat, virtual meeting software and experience with assessment data desirable

ADA Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Work normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment
  • Limited physical effort required
  • May have substantial travel within northeast region. Some National travel as needed. (at least 50%) 
  • Requires a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to type a minimum of 40 wpm
  • Driving, grasping, hearing, repetitive hand motions, lifting under 50 pounds, pulling, pushing, reaching, sitting, talking, typing

***Remote-based position; prefer candidates near the metro New York area. This role is a remote-based position with 50% travel requirements post COVID-19. Currently, all NTC staff are working remotely until further notice.
