Position Summary:

Support the mission of the Division of Student Affairs and Student Success as well as the Department of Henderson Housing, Community Standards, and Division Strategy. The RA’s supervisor will provide more specific direction during Fall Resident Assistant Training and throughout the year.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Display a positive attitude and support for all students, faculty, and staff.
  • Be available and accessible to students by spending quality interaction time in the residence halls during non-duty hours (supervisors may establish non-duty schedules to facilitate this responsibility).
  • Within the first two weeks, know the names of all students in your living area.
  • Hold an appropriate number of floor meetings each semester. 
  • Respect and maintain the confidentiality of staff and students.
  • Consistently encourage involvement and responsibility by floor residents.
  • Work closely with floor residents to provide a variety of community building activities for your floor or area.
  • Assist students in developing identity for their living unit.  This includes, but is not limited to floor or area names, shirts, logos, intramural organizations, etc.
  • Have sensitivity to and awareness of the needs, anxieties, and frustrations of each student in your area.
  • Assist students with defining and resolving their personal and educational in both group and one-on-one situations.
  • Refer students to the appropriate campus and community agencies when needed.
  • Work closely with residents, HDs and other RAs to provide a variety of programming for your hall.
  • Actively support and contribute to the success of Department programming.
  • Support and encourage active involvement by residents with hall programming.
  • Attend and participate in all staff training and workshop sessions, including Fall Training, Spring Training, and any Inservice meetings.
  • Assist with all Department and University special events, including opening and closing of all apartments and residence halls, Welcome Week, Reddie to Serve, Reddie for Henderson Days, Homecoming, Family Day, Relay for Life, etc.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and others as assigned by your supervisor.
  • Overnight campus leave is permitted no more than one weekend each month.  Supervisors will set specific duty requirements.
  • Participate in the recruitment, selection, and training of new staff members.
  • Discuss all activities (membership in clubs, etc.) with your supervisor in terms of time management and commitment.
  • Report all emergencies and serious situations to your supervisor.
  • Participate in the Resident Assistant on Duty schedule as specified by your supervisor.  Accept the fact that duty schedules may vary according to hall, number of staff, and population.
  • Complete administrative tasks such as check-in, checkout, maintenance requests, incident reports, surveys, etc. as assigned by your supervisor in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain complete and accurate room inventories and room checkouts.
  • Report maintenance problems as soon as possible.
  • Assist with any emergency evacuations and/or drills.
  • Maintain accurate records of key sign-outs and maintain the security of all keys.
  • Actively confront all disciplinary situations and document them professionally and immediately.
  • Uphold and enforce the policies and programs of Henderson State University.  Resident Assistants found violating stated policy may be terminated.
  • Help students to understand the purpose of the various rules and regulations.
  • Use discipline as a positive force to develop a sense of community and responsibility among residents.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Plan, provide, and evaluate programs that serve to enhance student life in the residence halls.

General Days/Hours:

Monday- Friday (8 am-5 pm); flexible hours; 10 - 15 hours a week

RAs will be held liable for all re-cores that result from the loss of keys either issued or entrusted to them.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be currently enrolled at Henderson State University.
Have a 2.3 Cumulative GPA or higher.
