Position Summary:

The Graduate Residence Hall Director (HD) is a live-in graduate assistant within the Housing & Community Standards team at Henderson State University. Hall Directors serve as professional staff members responsible for the daily operations of a residence hall and the supervision of Resident Assistants (RAs) and student leaders.

HDs foster inclusive, safe, and engaging residential communities that support student learning and development. Through leadership, visibility, and mentorship, Hall Directors promote community standards, respond to student needs, and contribute to a positive living-learning environment aligned with the mission of the University.

This position provides valuable professional experience in supervision, crisis response, student conduct, and community development while preparing graduate students for careers in higher education and student affairs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate a team of 6–8 Resident Assistants and provide ongoing staff development.

  • Serve as a visible and accessible leader within the assigned residence hall community.

  • Manage the daily operations of a residence hall (75–400 residents), including occupancy, facilities, and administrative processes.

  • Participate in an on-call duty rotation to respond to student concerns, crises, and emergencies.

  • Conduct student conduct meetings, document incidents, and support the community standards process.

  • Plan, oversee, and attend community programming initiatives that support student engagement and development.

  • Facilitate conflict mediation and provide guidance to students navigating personal, academic, or community concerns.

  • Complete administrative tasks and documentation, including reports, occupancy tracking, and facility management.

  • Coordinate hall openings, closings, check-in/check-out processes, and room changes.

  • Conduct facility walkthroughs, health and safety inspections, and oversee maintenance and cleanliness of the building.

  • Lead weekly staff meetings and biweekly one-on-one meetings with RAs.

  • Support campus-wide initiatives, Housing events, and departmental projects.

  • Maintain regular office hours and provide timely communication with residents and staff.

  • Serve as a referral agent by connecting students to campus resources.

  • Uphold all responsibilities outlined in the HD handbook and job agreement.

General Days/Hours:

• Position spans Fall and Spring semesters (August–May); summer opportunities may be available.
• Average workload is approximately 20 hours per week and 1 duty day/night a week due to housing and meal plan compensation.
• Hours vary weekly depending on operational needs and duty rotation, including evenings and weekends.
• Mandatory training and commitments include (dates subject to change):
o Hall Director Training: July 30–August 3
o Fall RA Training: August 4–14
o Apartment Move-In: August 13
o Residence Hall Move-In: August 15
o Welcome Week: August 16–23
o Winter Break Closing (meals not provided)
o Spring RA Training and Opening: January 6–10, 2027
o May 2027 Closing (meals not provided)
o Weekly staff meetings and once-per-semester in-service
• Additional hours required during peak periods such as training, opening, and closing.
• Time off must be approved in advance; availability is required during critical operational periods and assigned University breaks.

This application will only be considered for the term selected on page one and should be submitted directly to the department that has the desired Graduate Assistant position. A new application form must be submitted for each new period that an assistantship is desired.

The Master and Specialist assistantships will have a maximum time limit of five semesters. An exception is made for students admitted based on a Bachelor's Degree rather than a Master's Degree to the Ed.S. in Psychology and Counseling; these students will have a maximum time limit of eight semesters. Doctoral assistantships will have a maximum time limit of eight semesters. Two summer terms of five weeks each will count as one semester in all programs.

Some departments may request additional information such as a resume and/or a potential work schedule. Please contact the department directly to see if they require the submission of any additional documentation with the GA Application.

Master Graduate Assistants will receive instate tuition, and Doctoral Graduate Assistants receive a full tuition waiver. The Credit Hour and GPA requirement must be met, and a waiver form must be filled out in Student Accounts in order to receive the appropriate tuition adjustment.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be admitted to a graduate program at Henderson State University.
• Must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
• Must be in good academic, financial, and conduct standing with the University.
• Previous residence life or student leadership experience preferred.
• Must be able to fully participate in training, openings, closings, and ongoing responsibilities.
• Outside employment must be approved and may not exceed 10–15 hours per week.
• Graduate Students must have applied and have been accepted to the Graduate School and hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on graduate work in order to be eligible for a Graduate Assistant position.
• Master and Specialist GAs must complete a minimum of six hours of graduate credit during a regular semester. Their total credit hours (graduate and undergraduate) cannot exceed 12. Three graduate credit hours are required in the combined summer terms in order to hold a GA position in any summer term. Total summer credit hours may not exceed seven per summer term.
