Information Specialist
Zimmerman Associates, Inc. (ZAI) is seeking an Information Specialist to support the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) Information Center. This role provides research, reference, and knowledge management services to corrections professionals nationwide. The position directly supports NIC’s mission to deliver training and technical assistance that improve correctional practices and outcomes across the United States.
Position Overview
The Information Specialist will serve as a key member of the NIC Information Center team, delivering high-quality research support, managing knowledge resources, and assisting with information access and dissemination. This role requires strong research, analytical, and communication skills, along with the ability to support a high-volume, mission-driven information environment.
Key Responsibilities
Research & Reference Services
- Respond to complex information requests from federal, state, local, tribal, and other corrections professionals
- Conduct in-depth research on corrections-related topics, including operations, reentry, and evidence-based practices
- Locate, evaluate, and synthesize information from multiple research sources and databases
Knowledge Management & Library Operations
- Support daily operations of the NIC Information Center, including virtual and physical collections
- Catalog and index materials using established library standards and metadata best practices
- Maintain and update internal knowledge repositories and databases
- Manage access to online research tools, databases, and digital library collections
Digital Content & Systems Support
- Assist with updates to NIC websites and digital platforms
- Support information systems, online tools, and virtual resource access
Training, Outreach & User Support
- Support NIC-sponsored webinars, trainings, and learning events
- Provide user assistance and guidance on accessing NIC resources
- Support outreach initiatives to increase awareness and utilization of NIC services
Reporting & Performance Tracking
- Track service usage, inquiries, and performance metrics
- Prepare basic reports to support program evaluation and continuous improvement
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Library/Information Science (MLIS) or related field from an ALA-accredited institution OR degree in Public Administration or related discipline
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a library, academic, or public administration environment
- 2–3 years of experience providing reference and research services in a research, academic, or government library setting
- Demonstrated ability to develop effective search strategies and retrieve information from diverse research resources
- Strong ability to analyze, summarize, and synthesize complex information
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking ability
- Strong customer service skills
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in criminal justice, corrections, or related field
- Experience with integrated library systems (ILS), virtual checkout systems, or library technology platforms
- Experience supporting training, instruction, or facilitation activities
- Familiarity with information technology tools and digital knowledge management systems
