Senior Archives Technician

ZAI has an opening for a Senior Archives Technician to lead an archival project for a prominent federal library in Washington, D.C. The Senior Archives Technician will perform a variety of archival activities, including planning, assessment, arrangement, processing, and description of musical and textual manuscripts and official records. The position includes overseeing the work of an archives technician, as well as data tracking and reporting. The successful candidate must have 2-5 years of experience managing archival projects. 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assessments and re-appraisals of the archival collections 
  • Apply archival principles and best practices in the analysis, arrangement, preservation, and description of the materials
  • Identify preservation concerns and rehouse, photocopy, and stabilize archival materials, as needed
  • Refine the organization of materials with respect to their provenance 
  • Understand and follow the Library Division's Processing Manual in all aspects of the project
  • Collaborate with the federal points of contact to ensure proper handling, transfer, and description of archival materials.
  • Perform descriptive work to include creating portions of an Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aid and folder-level or box-level descriptions for a variety of materials
  • Manage the workflow to ensure all contract obligations are met
  • Track and maintain performance data and prepare reports for contract Points of Contact

 

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree required from an ALA-accredited institution, in library, archives, or museum studies
  • At least 3 years of experience performing similar work in an archives, including managing workflow and staff
  • Broad knowledge of the principles, concepts, and techniques of archival work, including analysis, organization, and description of archival material
  • Knowledge of American history, culture, documentary studies, oral history and/or other related subject areas and research sources to process and describe archival collections.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective workflow, tracking, and reporting processes
  • Ability to build and maintain professional relationships and communicate effectively with Library staff
  • Ability to identify preservation concerns and perform preservation duties such as rehousing and photocopying, as needed.
  • Safely lift, move, and rehouse boxes and archival materials weighing up to 35 pounds.
