Monday 8:30 AM-8:00 PM Tues, Wed, Thurs. 8:30 AM-5:00 PM Friday 8:30 AM-12:00 PM Must be available outside of normal business hours on a regular basis to address operational needs, respond to emergencies and severe weather, and supervise contractor work, particularly for the installation of pavement markings.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The City of Cambridge Traffic, Parking, and Transportation (TP+T) Department supports the safety and health of the Cambridge community by creating and sustaining a high-quality street and parking system that supports a range of transportation options for all those who live, travel, and park in Cambridge.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

Reporting to the Supervising Engineer in the Street Management Division, this position will assist with inspection and contractor supervision for the daily operations of the Engineering unit relating to installation and maintenance of traffic controls, pavement markings, and bicycle racks and fix-it stations.

Primary duties include:

  • Oversee contractor installation of pavement markings and bike racks, inspection of pavement markings and signage, and address maintenance issues for all types of traffic control devices.

Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct annual citywide inspections of pavement markings.
  • Oversee pavement marking contractors during overnight installation.
  • Layout of pavement markings with city and contractor crews
  • Layout of locations for new bike rack installations
  • Oversee contractors for installation and repair of bike racks.
  • Mark out underground traffic signal utilities (i.e. DigSafe).
  • Assist with snow emergency traffic operations.
  • Work with Engineering staff to assist with ongoing projects, studies, and citizen requests.
  • Perform data collection as needed, which may include traffic counts, observations, speed data collection, and field measurements.
  • Prepare traffic control work orders for the installation, improvement, and maintenance of signs, parking meters, and other traffic control devices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate’s degree in engineering science, Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or Construction Technology, or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience required.
  • Three to five years of experience in construction inspection or similar is highly desirable. A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Must be able to conduct tasks with little supervision and have good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be well organized and able to manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Must have the ability to understand engineering plans.
  • Must be proficient in computer use including Microsoft Office applications and have the ability to quickly learn the department’s suite of software.
  • Massachusetts Class D driver’s license required. Experience with riding a bicycle or micromobility device preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work involves frequent site visits, requiring traveling to and through active construction zones. Work indoors is in a professional office setting. Work outdoors includes construction sites and congested city roadways under all weather conditions. Work will include frequent overnight shifts during the spring, summer, and fall seasons to cover pavement marking operations. Supervising Engineer may adjust work hours to cover operational needs. Position is in-person only, with hybrid schedule/telework allowed subject to the provisions of the City’s Telework Policy.
