Job Summary

As one of the key team members, this position will play the key role of creating groundbreaking concepts  in advanced sequencing technology and next generation technologies for multi-omics tools. You will work closely with talented multidisciplinary team, including Hardware, Software, Image Analysis, Camera Imaging, & Firmware. You will be responsible for identifying future technology within your area and collaborate with Global teams of scientists and engineers to complete proof of concept as well as transferring proven technology to product development.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Serve as a key expert in Optics and Image Analysis technologies to contribute to definition of product technology directions and roadmaps.
• Partner with technical leads in biochemistry, flow cell technology, algorithms and system hardware to invent and develop optical systems architecture to underpin future sequencing and multi-omics products.
• Plan, develop, model, and analyze optical and system designs. Create, test and optimize various prototypes from elements and subsystems to complex integrated systems in the lab environment.
• Extensively collaborate with overseas Engineering team to further develop system concepts and successfully transfer to Product Development team.
• Contribute to data-driven decision making by crafting multifactorial experiments, collect and analyze data, presenting and discussing results.
• Contribute to long term planning activities and develop budgets for capital expenditures, external services and labor.
• Perform other work related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• 5+ years experience in optical system integration and design for instrumentation.
• Experience in an R&D environment focused on instrument design. Experience in the use of imaging optics, filters, mirrors, photodiode, CCD/CMOS, lasers and other light sources. Hands-on experience in image processing, microscopy or fluorescence detection system design and detector technologies.
• Strong hands-on experience with optical systems in a lab and manufacturing environment required.
• Knowledge of optical modeling, data acquisition and analysis, and system modeling using tools such as Zemax, ImageJ, JMP, MATLAB, Python, Excel, LabVIEW, etc.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to respond quickly to changes in project requirements
• Demonstrated ability working in a global matrixed environment.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize, and handle multiple projects and priorities.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Other requirements

• Travel at 5-10% level.

Education

• MS/PhD in an Engineering, Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with life science hardware systems, including fluidics, mechanical, and pneumatic subsystems, troubleshooting and optimization of system level performance desired.
• Image processing and Algorithms development experience, ideally base calling algorithms.
• Camera systems and Immersion optics development experience.

The base salary range for this position is $107,000 to $135,000 . This position will also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy. The actual compensation paid to any individual for this position may vary depending on factors such as experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training, and skill level. Actual compensation will be confirmed in writing at the time of offer.
