Optical Engineer

Job Summary:

The Optical Engineer works in our San Jose, CA engineering facility and makes significant contributions to architecture, prototyping and product design of new optical sequencing instrumentation. In addition, the Engineer provides technical support and advice to the Service team and other Engineering staff members. The position requires solid technical background in optical engineering as well as problem solving, hands-on design and lab skills, creativity and collaboration.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in product development of complex, precision optical instruments from architectural concept through production.

  • Design, develop, and help maintain the optical elements of instrumentation systems in fulfillment of the project goals.

  • Collaborate with other members to ensure successful completion, test, and deployment of the sequencing systems. This may include Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Consumable Designers, Software Engineers, Service Engineers, and Scientists.

  • Ensure proper engineering documentation and document control as required by the project. This may include design, regulatory, test, and planning documents.

  • Coordinate with outside vendors and suppliers as needed.

  • Participation in and contribution to planning, troubleshooting, and coordinating meetings and activities as needed to ensure project success.

  • Perform other work related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in optics, physics, or EE with academic or professional training focused on optical engineering  with minimum of 2 years experience.

  • Solid background in geometrical optics and physical optics and instrument metrology.

  • Extensive knowledge of precision optical system design, solid understanding of how microscopic imaging system works and experience with system level design.

  • Familiar with various optical components including light source, sensors, and imaging modalities etc.

  • Hands-on experience with building optical systems, doing optical alignment and building test setup.

  • Experience in product development of complex, precision instruments from concept through production.

  • Ability to carry out data analysis, trouble shooting and problem solving in building complex and interdisciplinary instruments.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master or Ph.D. in Optics or relevant fields.

  • Willing to travel up to 10% time.

  • Optical design experience with Zemax, CODEV or OSLO.

  • Experience with Opto-Mech design and CAD software tools.

  • Experience with data analysis tools, e.g. Matlab.
