Job Summary:

This position is for a self-motivated scientist and manager with strong technical background and extensive hands-on experience in molecular biology, especially in the field of single-cell sequencing and spatial genomics. The candidate will play the pivotal role of overseeing BGIRU’s NGS sequencing laboratory in our San Jose, CA facility, providing high-quality NGS runs. This candidate will lead a sequencing team to apply BGI/MGI’s proprietary sequencing technology, DNBtm technology, to their respective research areas to generate breakthrough scientific findings and publications.  


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of 2-4 RAs, prioritize collaboration projects and track key lab performances to meet business goals
  • Provide day-to-day planning to implement DNBtm sequencing technology for scientific collaboration projects, interpret and document results in a timely fashion.
  • Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis for issues with the workflows
  • Track all samples, maintain laboratory records and provide test reports through documentation and presentations
  • Communicate with team players effectively, and coordinate implementation of new workflows, incorporating inputs from internal and external stakeholders including R&D, Business development, and collaborators
  • Mentor and manage the team for continuous improvement to make this workflow more stable and scale for higher volumes.
  • Purchase and Maintain all lab equipment


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Material Science or related field with at least 3-5 years of department/lab/project management experience.
  • Hands-on experience in molecular biology or analytical techniques such as qRT-PCR, ddPCR, FISH, IHC, PAGE, flow cytometry, HPLC, molecular cloning, gene editing, and nucleic acid isolation and manipulation.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot failures through experimental design and execution
  • Experience with budget tracking and mapping budgets to projects and aims
  • Strong communication and organizational skills to manage multidisciplinary projects
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to plan and execute priorities and timelines


Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in NGS service lab is a plus.
  • Deep understanding of a wide variety of NGS library preparation workflows;
  • Experience developing and implementing novel QC methods to assess reagent performance in both functional and orthogonal assays.
  • Proven ability to write SOPs and train others to successfully perform the work.
