This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Civil Engineer - Solid Waste/Landfill Design for our Redmond, WA office.  Be involved in projects with our Site Assessment and Restoration, Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Provides technical support and guidance for our solid waste management clients for design of landfill components, including excavations, grading, lining, fill sequencing, closure, stormwater management, leachate management and landfill gas control.  Will also provide stormwater runoff permitting support and infrastructure design for intermediate waste handling facilities such as hauling yards, intermodal facilities, transfer stations, and material recovery facilities.  Work may involve improving processes, environmental due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, and environmental permitting projects.  Substantiates reports and documentation to advise on field conditions, contaminant movement, and outcome of overall risks to ecological and human health.   Assists project leadership with problem assessment, corrective strategies, classification of contaminated materials, development of process and infrastructure, and assisting with once-in-a-lifetime mixed-use projects of very large scale to smaller projects that involve very exciting design opportunities.  Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.  Will mentor and direct junior staff in design activities.  Will serve as design task manager with the intent to progress in a few years to project manager for waste disposal design projects.

Your Impact

  • Perform solid waste management engineering work and conduct investigations, analysis and inspections relating to landfill cell development, landfill closure, stormwater management, waste disposal and air quality.  
  • Determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits
  • Ensure that the planning and management of waste disposal and waste handling facilities are treated, improved upon and remains safe for various end uses – recreationally, commercially and/or industrially.
  • Work as an individual or as part of a cross-functional team to execute project work, assist with mass balance calculations, permit applications, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings or analyses.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations for clients, regulators, and other stakeholders.
  • Comply with regulatory requirements pertaining to the data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
  • Remain current in latest solid waste engineering techniques.
  • Assist with development and scoping of medium-sized projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, with a focus in Water Resources, Geotechnical or closely related discipline.
  • 5-7 years of relevant post education experience in civil engineering with at least 3 years of landfill design
  • Professional Engineer certification in states of Washington and Oregon, of the ability to obtain the certification within one year of hire.
  • Proficient knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to environmental permitting and project work-related issues.
  • Working knowledge of soil mechanics, soil compaction and slope stability
  • Working knowledge of designing with geosynthetics
  • Working knowledge of grading design using computer aided drafting (CAD).  
  • Working knowledge of stormwater management, drainage, erosion and sediment control, Hydrology & Hydraulics Design, etc.
  • Proficient ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
  • Working knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, preparing plans and specifications that incorporate the appropriate regulations. 
  • Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of facilities or structures, applying applicable regulations and policies.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, CAD Civil 3D software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Adept at coordinating technical matters with public and private groups.
  • Ability to assertively direct others in the field such as subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Experience managing small to mid-size projects.
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120).
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training
