This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a CQA Technician - Soil Testing and Geosynthetics for our Houston, Texas office.  The successful candidate will conduct Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) observation and testing services for earthen and geosynthetic containment systems for a variety of local and national solid waste facilities.  

Your Impact

  • Field testing and sampling of soil, aggregate and concrete materials
  • Conducting field investigations and environmental sampling programs
  • Geosynthetics monitoring and testing
  • Construction observation and documentation
  • Review and comprehension of construction specifications
  • Document interpretation to ensure projects are completed in accordance with project design drawings and technical specifications
  • Interaction with contractors and owners in a positive and constructive manner to solve issues that arise during construction
  • Assist with other field activities as needed including but not limited to geophysical surveys, stormwater and groundwater sampling, surveying, etc.
  • Participation and contribution to daily safety meetings
  • Legal and safe operation of vehicle on behalf of the company
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals, scientists, engineers, inspectors, project control, and technicians on assigned inspection phases, checks, and tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 3 years of relevant experience
  • Prior experience as a field technician in construction quality assurance (CQA) preferred.
  • The ability to perform all duties within established deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Position will benefit from the understanding of civil and geotechnical engineering design and background in earthworks construction including the ability to read and understand technical civil design drawings and technical specifications.
  • Travel, including travel for extended assignments is required.
  • Daily report writing and construction documentation is required.
  • The ability to communicate constructively with contractors, owners and WSP Project Managers is essential.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and walk up/down slopes.
  • Must be able to work up to 12-hours outdoors in hot or cold environments safely.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Ability to provide input and feedback to others in the field such as subcontractors and work colleagues to consistently complete tasks safely, efficiently, and accurately according to specifications.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree in closely related discipline is preferred.
  • At least 1 year of field and/or construction experience
  • An understanding of civil and geotechnical engineering design and background in earthworks construction including the ability to read and understand technical civil design drawings and technical memos
  • Exposure to GIS or Civil 3D, and other data analysis tools
  • NICET, ACI, GRI Certification, MSHA and OSHA 40 hour Hazwoper training and certificate
