This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for  Part-Time Avian Specialists for our Albany, NY office, with the possibility to be remote.  The following locations will also be considered: Buffalo, NY.  Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. 

Your Impact

  • Conduct avian surveys in the North Country (NY) and possibly elsewhere.
  • Conduct wintering grassland raptor and breeding bird surveys.
  • Compiling and processing survey data.
  • Provide support, if necessary, for wetland delineations, bat field surveys, plant and habitat surveys, and vegetation characterizations.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
     

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Environmental Science or a closely related discipline preferred but not required.
  • Six months to three years of field experience conducting avian surveys and recording point count and/or transect data.
  • Strong visual/auditory bird identification skills (must be able to identify birds by their call/songs) and familiarity with regional avian populations and survey protocol.
  • Ability to walk for several miles and work in extreme temperatures and rough terrain in remote locations.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and ability to work independently and within a team setting.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to travel to a project sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with iPAD and/or Trimble hand-held GPS units preferred.
  • Preference for individuals with CPR/First Aid Training.
  • Other field skills such as wetland delineations, bat field surveys, plant and habitat surveys, and vegetation characterizations an asset, but not required.
