Supervises and coordinates activities of respiratory therapy personnel in all areas of the hospital including flight transport. Verifies that patients’ needs are met and evaluates respiratory care provided. Oversees maintenance of patient clinical records and compiles reports on medical services rendered. Provides leadership and engages in staff development.
Perform all essential functions outlined in the Respiratory Therapist III job description
Provides leadership during schedule conflicts, unplanned changes in activity, last minute deadlines and crisis situations
Plans, directs, and implements care to patients in accordance with physicians orders, policies and procedures
Provides, manages and coordinates care; applies analytical reasoning, rational problem-solving skills, using evidence-based information and clinical judgement; act as clinical resource to other staff members
Works closely with Directors, Managers, Support Services, Materials Management, Supervisors and other personnel to establish and maintain inventory levels, specialty supplies and equipment
Consults and communicates with physicians to ensure proper care and follow up of patients
Assists with unit needs assessment of equipment, environment, new technology, for the development of capital budgeting in conjunction with unit manager
Maintains knowledge of standards of care, job performance and hospital/department policies and procedures demonstrated through leadership of self and staff
Develops hospital/department policy and standard work relating to respiratory care procedures under the direction of the department manger
Assists in the orientation of new personnel as well as incidental and planned education of staff.
.Participates in hospital committees and initiatives related to patient care
Investigates and triages quality alerts and complaints of patients, physicians, nursing, and all other staff members of TMC and reports back to the department manager
Adheres to TMC organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies and standards.
Performs related duties as assigned.
ROLE SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS:
Provides on-going orientation and professional development for all levels of personnel within the respiratory care department. Provides clinical orientations, competency assurance and on-going education opportunities. Works in collaboration with other Clinical Educators in development and implementation of hospital-wide education programs. Maintains records of training activities and employee progress. Uses information from QI datas, need assessments, risk management concerns, safety issues, and infection control, and TJC, HCFA, and OSAH requirments to create education programs.
Quality Assurance/ABG Lab:
Supports clinical performance through chart abstraction, chart review, and reporting of medical record clinical documentation to support initiatives related to quality improvement, accreditation, and regulatory requirements. The successful abstractor engages clinicians in measures of care and provides education to ensure accurate clinical documentation and evidence-based care; submits data in a timely manner, identifies variances for review and produces reports related to the data.
Works collaboratively with TMC Lab personnel to provide oversight of operational, regulatory and technical aspects of the ABG lab. Performs audits on labeling of samples and proper charting of results and provides feedback and re-training opportunities to respiratory staff.
Bronchoscopy & Pulmonary Function Testing:
Provides orientation, education, and continued professional development for respiratory therapists in the bronchoscopy and pulmonary function labs. Responsible for maintaining equipment and disposable inventory. Works collaboratively with physicians, nursing, and other medical personnel to provide advanced diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy procedures. Provides input for process improvement and expansion of services.
EDUCATION: Associate degree from a CoARC accredited Respiratory Care Program required. Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Care or related field preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of related experience or preferred 5 years of advanced respiratory therapy experience relating to all age-specific groups.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION:
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and current Arizona License to Practice Respiratory Care required. Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), Advance Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NPR) certifications required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of respiratory care techniques, tools and responses required to ensure optimal patient care
Knowledge of all regulatory requirements and laws regarding respiratory/patient care and practice.
Skill in evaluating performance and recommending improvements
Skill in communicating with staff involved in respiratory care and physicians to ensure the proper care of patients
Skill in developing training materials and educating staff in the proper responses for respiratory care
Skill in the use and maintenance of computer systems and programs such as Word, Excel, outlook email, and PowerPoint
Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence
Ability to effectively present information to management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
Ability to listen and accurately interpret others’ communication or instructions to take appropriate action
Ability to speak and communicate effectively
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
