The Bed Control Nurse (BCN) rapidly, efficiently, and accurately triages patient levels of acuity. The BCN facilitates patient transfer requests from referring facilities to TMC, coordinates the admission of TMC Emergency Department (ED) patients, and assigns inter-unit patient transfers in a timely manner. The BCN practices with a sense of urgency in their Bed Control (BC) workflow to manage the patient “inter-unit” bed assignments, patient transfer requests from referring facilities, and coordinating the TMC Emergency Department (ED) patient admissions. The BCN accepts all appropriate unit bed assignments made based on admission criteria. As the BCN navigates the Bed Control workflow process the BCN must exhibit proficiency in the bed assignment system using Epic Software. The BCN ensures appropriate patient bed placement using critical thinking skills and applying resource utilization to facilitate patient admission to the appropriate level of care and nursing unit.
Obtain clinical information, screen patient admissions requests for appropriateness of admission, patient status, and level of care.
Understand and apply the InterQual criteria (utilization management function).
Apply in-depth knowledge of EMTALA regulations.
Apply in-depth knowledge of Medicare COP to issues of admission, status, level of care, and priority.
Facilitate timely acceptance of admissions from physician offices and referring facilities so that no appropriate potential admission is lost due to untimely bed assignment.
Collaborate with the Admitting department to ensure accurate patient information in order to eliminate lost reimbursements for direct admissions.
Collaborate with admitting physician/provider to ensure correct admission status and level of care, and accept verbal admission orders.
Collaborate with nursing units, ED, and House Supervisor (HS) regarding patient admission status and level of care.
Manage patient admission and Epic patient tracking system to ensure proper patient placement.
Educate staff and physicians/providers regarding InterQual criteria and utilization.
Refer complicated patient issues relating to status to Physician Adviser and follow up to ensure accurate patient status.
Assist Bed Control Nurse Manager in maintaining and compiling direct admission statistics on a daily basis.
Orient, instruct, and educate any assigned personnel.
Identify and resolve workplace health and safety issues.
Comply with policies, procedures, regulations, and standards, and take corrective action when violations occur.
Adheres to TMC organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies and standards.
Perform related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: Graduation from a qualified, nationally-accredited nursing program; preferred BSN.
EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of critical care experience; preferably Emergency Department (ED) with Triage skills.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: Current RN licensure permitting work in the state of Arizona.

Knowledge of direct patient care and critical care procedures and techniques, tools, and responses required to ensure optimal patient care.
Skill in communicating with physicians via telephone to ensure proper patient care.
Skill in the use of computer applications such as Microsoft Office: Word, EXCEL, and systems such as SDK.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.
