Apply to be a proud employee of the Pinellas County Administrative Services Division team as an Electronics Specialist within the Facility Operations Division. Facility Operations provides professional in-house and contracted services to maintain and operate County buildings.
This is highly responsible technical work in organizing and completing the maintenance and repair, of various multi-building complexes located within Pinellas County. The position requires the incumbent to have experience in advanced electronic knowledge that is proficient in computer-based technology with the ability to design, manipulate, repair, and configure access control systems, Building Automation Control Systems (BAS), fire/life safety alarm systems, suppression/sprinkler systems, IP video surveillance, uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS), variable frequency drive (VFD) and all other electronics devices throughout many county facilities.
The incumbent shall have the ability to troubleshoot networks, back up devices, and add or replace devices used to operate the many HVAC, lighting, and building automation throughout Pinellas County. Other duties involve IP video surveillance systems maintenance and creation of evidence or event videos at the request of the public, law enforcement, or government officials. Have a solid knowledge of wiring door strikes, card readers, electric hinges, and electronic controllers. Customer focus and maintaining successful and collaborative relationships with peers, managers, supervisory, skilled and administrative staff, and contracted support services.
Essential Job Functions
- Performs installation, maintenance, modification, calibration and repair of electronic and electrical instrumentation, equipment and control systems.
- Performs installation, maintenance, modification, calibration and repair of complex electrical power systems, related instrumentation, equipment, and control systems.
- Detects causes of electronic and electrical failures, interprets and ensures compliance with established codes, calculates data necessary for wiring instrument systems and requisitions supplies and materials needed to complete tasks.
- Trains new Electronics Specialists and other skilled personnel in all phases of a variety of electronic and electrical instrumentation, equipment and control systems; provides technical advice and assistance.
- Inspects instrumentation and equipment to determine operating conditions and needed repairs and modifications.
- Performs bench work repairs and overhauls and rebuilds complex electronic or electrical equipment.
- Performs emergency and routine field servicing of complex electrical power systems, backup power generating systems, equipment and performs tests on parts, modules or assemblies.
- Prepares sketches, preliminary or work plans for establishment or modification of electrical systems.
- Prepares purchase orders to complete work, obtain parts for repairing equipment.
- Arranges for repairs and serves as technical review specialist for work completed by outside vendors performing work on county operations.
- Performs both low voltage and high voltage tasks depending on the area of assignment.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Position Specific Requirements
- 3 years’ experience in highly automated computer-based electronics instrumentation installation, maintenance, and repair such as, advanced electronic knowledge in computer-based technology with the ability to design, manipulate, repair, and configure access control systems, Building Automation Control Systems (BAS), fire/life safety alarm systems, suppression/sprinkler systems, IP video surveillance, uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS), variable frequency drive (VFD) and all other electronics devices; or
- Associate’s degree or two-year technical degree in directly related coursework plus 1 year of highly automated computer-based electronics instrumentation installation, maintenance, and repair such as, advanced electronic knowledge in computer-based technology with the ability to design, manipulate, repair, and configure access control systems, Building Automation Control Systems (BAS), fire/life safety alarm systems, suppression/sprinkler systems, IP video surveillance, uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS), variable frequency drive (VFD) and all other electronics devices; or
- Bachelor’s or higher-level degree in the Electronic Trades or related field; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver’s License upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.
- Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
Highly Desirable
- Experience with working knowledge of Tridium Niagara, WINPAK, Wincontrol XL PLUS, Total Control, Design Studio, KMD, NET AXS.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Knowledge of electronic theory and equipment and electronic maintenance and repair practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of operating characteristics, capabilities and limitations of computer equipment and routine computer operations and terminology.
- Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the electronic and electrical trades.
- Skill in troubleshooting automated systems and isolating breakdown causes.
- Ability to relate technical information in a manner understandable to subordinates, superiors, and members of the public.
- Ability to conduct tests, analyze results, take corrective steps and apply knowledge of electronic theory and troubleshooting procedures.
- Ability to interpret and work from technical sketches and blueprints and locate, define and repair defects in equipment.
- Ability to use a computer to complete assignments, track work, prepare communications, reports, etc.
- Ability to communicate in both written and oral forms of English.
Physical/Mental Demands
The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
- Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
