Engineer/Scientist 5 – Senior System Engineer (Linux)
Job Description:
The candidate will provide Systems Engineer support in a research/lab environment. The operating environment utilizes workstations & servers running Red Hat Enterprise operating systems in both clustered and virtual environments. Support will also include Citrix and Forcepoint solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform software installation and maintenance.
- Properly configure resources to accommodate research experiments.
- Troubleshoot and fix hardware/software problems and interface with networking teams to maintain connectivity.
- Build and configure workstations, servers and keep systems up to date.
- Address vulnerabilities found during security audits and properly document risk mitigations.
- Communicate with customers to plan deployments and perform troubleshooting.
- Provide occasional off-hour support on rare occasions.
Basic Qualifications:
- U.S. Citizenship
- Ability to secure and maintain an active DoD Security Clearance.
- A total of 10+ years of relevant IT experience: Information Systems, Systems Engineering and/or security experience in network software and hardware.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Software, Systems, Network, or Industrial Engineering; Computer Science, Information Technology or Assurance, Cybersecurity, Information Systems, or other related Scientific/Technical discipline from an accredited University is preferred.
- Minimum DOD 8570/8140 compliant by obtaining/maintaining required certifications such as SSCP, SCNP, Security+, or GSEC.
Preferred Skills/Experience:
- Experience with recent versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
- Knowledgeable with Citrix systems.
- Knowledgeable with Forcepoint solutions.
- Familiarity with DOD and Navy policies and procedures.
- Experience documenting technical standards and procedures.
- Working knowledge of networking technology including, switches, firewalls, and routers.
- Experience with clustered systems.
- Provide support for demonstrations.
- Experience with the RMF processes.
- Expertise in scripting using BASH, CSH, PERL, Python, or other scripting languages
- Configuring Grid Engine Job Scheduler (or other similar ones like Maui/Torque, LSF, Condor, etc.) Virtualization using KVM and QEMU or similar.
- Experience booting diskless provisioned nodes using PXE, TFTP, and NFSROOT.
- Configuring DNSMASQ for PXE booting. Creating Linux chroot images for network booting.
- Modifying the Linux kernel and initramfs. Configuring bridges, VLANS and STP on Linux. Configuring IPTABLE. Configuring Cisco switches for trunking.
- Expertise with Linux and familiarity with Mac and Windows operating systems.
- Excellent problem solving skills.
- Experience with system monitoring and troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with open source tools such as Warewulf, Rocks, xCAT, Grid Engine, Maui/Torque, LSF, condor, etc.
