Summer 2021, Advocacy Intern
|Work Location:||Washington, DC - US|
|# of Openings:||1|
Freedom House monitors, strengthens, and defends democracy worldwide through programs that support frontline activists, research, and advocacy. We are leaders in identifying threats to civil liberties and political rights, and never in our 80-year history has our work mattered more.
This is a temporary internship with a $500.00/month stipend for full time (30+ hours/week) or a $300.00 stipend for part time (<30hours/week).
The Freedom House advocacy team leads our engagement with the U.S. government – both Congress and the Administration – and has cemented a strong reputation for the organization throughout Washington, DC. With specialized expertise in U.S. foreign policy and the American legislative system, the team turns Freedom House’s research and programmatic expertise into concrete policy recommendations for the U.S. government. We work closely with agency officials and Hill staff, advocating for U.S. leadership on democracy, human rights, and governance (DRG) issues, including consistent DRG funding and specific legislative proposals to strengthen DRG globally and to constrain authoritarian regimes’ ability to take advantage of free and open democracies.
The Advocacy Intern will assist with outreach to congressional offices, take notes for (virtual) congressional hearings and events, research and track congressional activity on democracy issues, and assist with the creation and distribution of external content for Freedom House. Additionally, the Advocacy Intern will update and maintain our internal contacts database, assemble contact lists and other spreadsheets in Excel, and assist with event planning and scheduling. The Advocacy Intern may be asked to perform other administrative duties and responsibilities as needed.
