Position Summary

The Intern will assist with logistical, research, and administrative support for Middle East and North Africa (MENA) programs. The Intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in conducting research, program administration and implementation, proposal development and writing to shape Freedom House’s work to promote democracy and human rights in the MENA region, with special attention devoted to Iran. This full-time (30 hours/week), internship is remote and reports to the Iran Program Officer.

Desired internship dates: January 25, 2021 to May 7, 2021


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide research assistance for programs and proposal development
  • Assist with editing/writing proposals, reports, press releases, and briefing books
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for day-to-day functioning of the Middle East and North Africa programs, with special attention devoted to programs in Iran. 
  • Monitor political, social, and economic trends in the MENA region, with specialization in Iran
  • Prepare financial forms and draft agreements, translating back-up documents as needed
  • Assist with organizing events and meetings in DC and abroad related to FH programs
  • Other related duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in an accredited college or university as an undergraduate or graduate student required
  • Strong ability to communicate clearly in English (required) and Farsi (preferred), verbally and in writing
  • Excellent research, analytical, writing, and organizational skills
  • Mastery of MS Office Suite specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of human rights principles and mechanisms, and understanding of democracy promotion, with a focus on the Middle East and North Africa
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Strong ability to plan, organize, prioritize work, and multi task to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to apply superb attention to detail and consistently produce timely and error free work
  • Excellent research, analytical, writing, and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles and grant-related compliance requirements preferred
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times
